Big Springs Mayor Merrill Mercer Dies at 51
Merrill Mullen Mercer, 51, mayor of Big Springs, died of a heart attack at home. A 41-year resident, born August 14, 1913, in Grand Island, he belonged to the Methodist Church and the Llks Lodge. Survived by wife Reatha, four sons Dave Monte Julesburg Cole Marvin Danny, a brother Theron, and other relatives. Funeral Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church, Rev. Hervey Porter officiating. burial at Big Springs. Funeral Home of Julesburg in charge.

Box Butte Civil Defense head to be paid $100 monthly
Clyde Lawson Hemingford will receive $100 a month plus 8 cents a mile for driving as Box Butte County Civil Defense director. The county board approved the resolution with funds split between county and state sources. Lawson has completed an approved countywide Civil Defense plan in under a year, having previously directed Hemingford’s plan. He often travels to Alliance, where the Civil Defense office is housed in The Times Herald building basement.
