Soil Bank Pay For Wheat Cut Will Be Higher
The Agriculture Department set Jan 13 to March 7 for farmers to sign soil bank retirement agreements for next year. It raised long term conservation reserve targets while lowering short term acreage reserve goals, with 825 million dollars available for payments. Rates will rise for wheat and corn retirements to offset higher yields, with wheat about 20.88 and 20.04 dollars and corn about 44.46 and 42.66. The department aims to retire at least 30 million acres, plus 10 million more in the long term reserve, under contracts averaging about 10 dollars per acre annually. Acreage reserve goals include about 444 million acres for wheat and four to five million for corn.

Thanksgiving vacation starts Wednesday afternoon as classes end in Sidney. All schools close Thursday for the national holiday except restaurants offering special menus. Buck Battle Near Sidney Ends in Death
A ferocious fight between two large buck deer about five miles north of Sidney Sunday morning left one dead along the road north of Huntsman Gas Plant. Witnesses called Sheriff W W Schultz, who arrived after the battle. The victor carried off three does, while the dead animal bore multiple horn wounds. The sheriff described the scene and noted the carcass showed repeated horn penetrations.

Rites Set Wednesday At Plainview For Fred Westerhoff
Fred Westerhoff 91 died yesterday morning in Plainview Neb while visiting his daughter Mrs Charles Martty. He had been in poor health for two months. He is grandfather of Mrs Melvin Adams and uncle of Arnold Westerhoff Sidney Elmer Westerhoff Dalton and Mrs Gilbert Sorge Gurley. Funeral services will be Wednesday at the Lutheran Church Plainview. Survivors include seven children more than 20 grandchildren and more than 30 great grandchildren.
