Western Nebraska anxiously weighs Air Force decision on Cheyenne missile base. Sioux Ordnance Depot near Sidney eyes a possible new mission storing missiles to support the Cheyenne project. Local officials plan to press Washington in January for a modernized role while workforce cuts continue.
Rep A L Miller told The Telegraph by phone that Cheyenne’s missile base location could boost Sioux Ordnance Depot's chance to store atomic warheads and missiles. He plans to check with Defense Department sources in Washington and hopes to learn the thinking linking Sioux with the Cheyenne project before his Sidney visit.
A 450 pound Black Himalayan bear named Jill escaped from a cage at a Sid ney zoo on South 19th Avenue Wednesday night. Police and deputies joined veterinarians in the chase as Jill destroyed car upholstery and damaged telephones and sweeping compound. After drowsy attempts with doped food, honey lured Jill back to the cage where she was recaptured. Mitsy, the bear’s mate, remained calm during the disturbance.
Coldest weather of the season hit the Sidney region this week with a low of six degrees early Thursday. The morning reading rose above six but did not reach zero as forecast earlier.

Dick Brown of Lodgepole, son of Mr and Mrs Curtis Brown, was on the aircraft carrier Phillipine Sea in the search for survivors and evidence of the wrecked strato cruiser reported to have gone down in the Pacific. Members of the National U. S. Highway 40 Association, a 15000-strong group of motel owners and merchants from Atlantic City to San Francisco, urge the Denver to Kremmling route with a tunnel under Berthoud Pass. The plan opposes a split route via Nebraska and Wyoming, warning it will cost tourism and business along Route 30.
Mrs. Elsie Hill 71 of Sunol died at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services set for 10 am Monday at First Methodist Church in Sidney with Rev. R. L. Townsend officiating. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Gehrig and Son in charge. She was born Elsie Beynon March 1, 1887 in Lafayette Colorado. Survived by brother Guy Beynon of El Centro California, niece Mable Jones and nephew Elmer Hurd of Boulder Colorado.
Grain markets report a wheat price of 1.80 per bushel from local elevator sources. The figure reflects current trading levels for the commodity in the area.
Miss Mabel Nielsen, a senior high school teacher, was named Cheyenne County chair of the Nebraska Heart Fund Association. She succeeds Lou Winter, who requested relief after several years. Plans for February fund drive were set at yesterday afternoon’s regional workshop in the local Elks club rooms.
W Ray Wood 60, of two miles west of Peetz, died of a heart attack at his home after a long illness. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the United Brethren Evangelical Church in Peetz with Rev. Glenn McPherson officiating. Burial will be in Peetz Cemetery with Peetz American Legion Post providing graveside rites. He was a World War I veteran, married June 29, 1921, to Viola Mae Van Valkenburg, and is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, and five grandchildren.
A group of Kimball county tax returns were picked up at the County Assessor’s office by a representative of the State Tax Commissioner’s office. They are to be studied by the Legislative Council’s special tax investigating committee. Senator Terry Carpenter said investigations will include several western Nebraska counties. No returns have been taken from Cheyenne County yet.
Cheyenne County treasurer M. M Inhelder reports tax receipts surpassing 400 000 dollars since Oct 1 with 348 962 dollars from 1957 taxes. Early notices and prompt payment credited for high intake. first half personal taxes due Dec 1 with interest after. Real estate taxes due July 1 delinquent May 1. Delinquencies not expected to rise much.
Sidney merchants plan Friday after Thanksgiving and every Friday until Christmas to stay open until 8 p.m. to help families shop together. A majority of businessmen adopt the Friday schedule, matching shopper needs and holiday prep.
Postmaster Don Gillham invites applications for extra help at the Sidney postoffice during the Christmas season. Positions pay 1.65 dollars per hour with a December 2 deadline. Veterans receive preference in hiring.
