Bear Escapes Cage In Sid ney Zoo Chaos

A 450 pound Black Himalayan bear named Jill escaped from a cage at a Sid ney zoo on South 19th Avenue Wednesday night. Police and deputies joined veterinarians in the chase as Jill destroyed car upholstery and damaged telephones and sweeping compound. After drowsy attempts with doped food, honey lured Jill back to the cage where she was recaptured. Mitsy, the bear’s mate, remained calm during the disturbance.

Dick Brown of Lodgepole, son of Mr and Mrs Curtis Brown, was on the aircraft carrier Phillipine Sea in the search for survivors and evidence of the wrecked strato cruiser reported to have gone down in the Pacific. Earlier, a news release said the carrier abandoned the search and returned to port with several bodies found at sea.

Route 40 Boosters Push Colorado Interstate Route

Members of the National U. S. Highway 40 Association, a 15000-strong group of motel owners and merchants from Atlantic City to San Francisco, urge the Denver to Kremmling route with a tunnel under Berthoud Pass. The plan opposes a split route via Nebraska and Wyoming, warning it will cost tourism and business along Route 30.

Mrs. Elsie Hill Dies At 71 Funeral Monday

Mrs. Elsie Hill 71 of Sunol died at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services set for 10 am Monday at First Methodist Church in Sidney with Rev. R. L. Townsend officiating. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Gehrig and Son in charge. She was born Elsie Beynon March 1, 1887 in Lafayette Colorado. Survived by brother Guy Beynon of El Centro California, niece Mable Jones and nephew Elmer Hurd of Boulder Colorado.

W Ray Wood 60 Dies of Heart Attack at Home

W Ray Wood 60, of two miles west of Peetz, died of a heart attack at his home after a long illness. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the United Brethren Evangelical Church in Peetz with Rev. Glenn McPherson officiating. Burial will be in Peetz Cemetery with Peetz American Legion Post providing graveside rites. He was a World War I veteran, married June 29, 1921, to Viola Mae Van Valkenburg, and is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, and five grandchildren.

State Tax Returns Taken From Kimball County Office

A group of Kimball county tax returns were picked up at the County Assessor’s office by a representative of the State Tax Commissioner’s office. They are to be studied by the Legislative Council’s special tax investigating committee. Senator Terry Carpenter said investigations will include several western Nebraska counties. No returns have been taken from Cheyenne County yet.
