Nebraska reports predict no passenger trains in 3 to 5 years as Burlington seeks to drop Omaha to Denver Trains 7 and 8. The Post Office plans an air taxi first class mail service starting in December with Grand Island as Nebraska hub, linking Chadron Alliance North Platte and others.

Oil Search Still Brisk In Nebraska Despite Sioux County Duster

Oil drilling remained brisk in Nebraska last week though Sioux County wildcat in the duster was plugged. The Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission approved five cases and reported 1,121,433 barrels produced in September at 37,381 barrels daily, with Sleepy Hollow Field in Red Willow County contributing over 200 thousand barrels.

Mobile Unit Study For Unit 19 Feasibility Ahead

Educational Unit 19 studies a mobile unit to serve the three county area with Wayne Peterson and Dr. H C Q Nelson heading the project. A full time speech therapist may be hired next year and visual aid services including specialist visits or surgery may be offered to needy children.

Panhandle Weather Outlook Partly Cloudy With Snow Flurries

Partly cloudy to cloudy through this afternoon tonight and Saturday in the Panhandle. A few snow flurries are expected Saturday morning. Winds west 20 to 30 mph this afternoon, 10 to 20 mph tonight. Low tonight 20 to 30, high Saturday 35 to 45. Precipitation chance less than five percent this afternoon, 10 percent tonight, 60 percent Saturday. Colder weather expected Saturday and Sunday.

Restored Post Home Closed Until Spring

The Fort Sidney Post Commander’s home is closed now until spring. Over five thousand people registered during this first season. The board thanks volunteers and Sidney City Council for support. Mrs. Jerry Haupt becomes furnishing committee chair. The Cheyenne County Historical Assn meets first Monday evenings. all are welcome.

Brake failure blamed for Sidney three car crash

A three car collision in Sidney at 3 45 p m Wednesday was blamed on brake failure in one car. Judith Banks 16 drove north on 11th approaching from the rear as two cars stopped for a red light at 11th and Illinois. Banks said she applied brakes but they failed. Her car struck Diana Zwicki 17 which struck Catherine Andrejewski 17.

Business Institute Workshop in Sidney Sees Key local event

The Business Institute of Sidney schedules its third annual workshop and dinner for next Wednesday November 29 at Ft. Sidney Motor Hotel. An afternoon career workshop covers data processing and electronic computing advances with a tour of the business school. Ed Cole of the Sidney Chamber of Commerce welcomes guests. H L McCoy, director of private and vocational schools in Lincoln, will speak. Ft. Sidney Colonels provide entertainment. Ron Heit aims for large turnout and expects impact on future enrollments at the growing Sidney business school.

Stand Still Reached In Cheyenne County Robbery Probe

The Cheyenne County Sheriff says the Nov 17 Robbery of Terry's Liquor at 1340 Illinois is at a standstill as investigators review local leads. Clerk Edward Doty described a white man about 5 11 and 160 pounds who struck him and fled with about $200 after requesting beer. The weapon, a broken fishing-pole handle, was left at the scene. A composite sketch remains unsolved.

State Meeting Set Nov 29 30 Farmers Union Convention

Ten people from Cheyenne County plan to attend the Nebraska Farmers Union annual convention in North Platte on November 29 and 30. Topics include a bargaining act, wage and benefit talks, and possible opposition to corporate farming. The group also seeks support for state income tax relief and sales tax reduction to two percent or less.

R D Dodge Rites Today

Robert D. Dodge 90 died after 11 days in Memorial Hospital. A Sidney resident for seven years he retired from the electrical business and will be cremated in Denver. Survived by three daughters, one son, 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
