Western Nebraskans woke to a welcome snow cover six to twelve inches across the Panhandle. The moisture ends drought risk, supports winter wheat, with an estimated ten bushels per acre gain and Cheyenne County's 1953 crop value rising by about five million dollars.
The Cheyenne County Extension Sponsoring Board will hold its second annual meeting Monday at 2 PM in the Legion room of the Sidney City Auditorium. It will elect two directors for three years and discuss county extension operations. The meeting marks separation from the Cheyenne County Farm Bureau after twenty years of joint sponsorship.
Mrs Barbara Geis 93 a Dalton pioneer died Thursday morning at her home. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 p m at Trinity Lutheran Church Dalton Rev Dr Rupley officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery beside husband Frederick died March 1946. Craig Mortuary in charge. She came to Dalton in 1891. Survived by one son and one daughter. A fuller obituary will appear Tuesday in The Telegraph.
The weekly bulletin from the state bureau of agricultural statistics says Panhandle wheat benefited from heavy snow and rain adding moisture, improving survival prospects for summer fallow wheat. In contrast, 40 percent of the wheat area in central and southwestern Nebraska remains poor due to little moisture. Corn harvest nears completion with good quality. sugar beets and potatoes move well, hay surplus shifts south, and hog production interest wanes.
The latest polio victim in Cheyenne County is Mrs Harlan Maddox taken to a Scottsbluff hospital Monday evening. She remains isolated with paralysis in the legs and hips with uncertain permanence. Earlier in the month Mrs Arthur Ladine of Dalton was treated in Scottsbluff for polio with paralysis of the leg and arm.
The VFW Auxiliary to Porter McGuire Post 610 voted a 250 donation to Sidney Community Hospital Drive at its Thursday meeting. Members also assembled canned goods for Thanksgiving baskets and appointed a dues-collection committee including Loretta Nelson Josephine Maddox Jessie Bowen and Mary Mitchell. New members Jane Robinson and Elva Hessel joined the auxiliary.
Snow across Cheyenne County and western Nebraska drenched wheat fields and raised moisture to protect the crop. Sidney recorded 12 inches with varying depths and .73 inch precipitation while roads iced and drifts hampered travel. Agriculture officials hailed the rain as easing winter risk, boosting root growth, alfalfa and pastures, with hunting seasons noted as still open.
Mr and Mrs George Puckett suffered injuries when their car skidded on packed snow east of Torrington Wyoming. He had bruises and cuts while she sustained a broken nose and a fractured thumb. They were treated in Torrington and returned to Sidney on Wednesday. The vehicle, worth about 500 dollars, was damaged in the crash at a bridge abutment.
Voters in School District No. 1 approved a 300000 bond by six to one amid bad weather. 648 voted yes and 104 no, funding a new elementary school in the south and an addition to the North Ward building with plan reviews due soon.

The Rockland Brothers indoor circus arrives at Sidney City Auditorium on Monday November 24 with fifteen acts, including the Valentina sisters and Banzo the chimpanzee. Proceeds benefit the Sidney Baseball Association. Matinee at 4 and evening show at 8, prices fifty cents for children and one dollar for adults.
Thirty Sidney community housewives can have their Thanksgiving turkey baked free by Bob's Bakery in a fundraiser for the Cheyenne County Hospital Fund. Participants must donate to the hospital fund at least two dollars, with higher gifts accepted. Details appear in The Telegraph ad.
Dr J B Roche announced plans to leave Sidney around year end to join a general practice in Braintree Massachusetts. He will work with Dr Arthur Sullivan and move with his wife whose family resides in Braintree. Roche has practiced in Sidney four years after Army service and is active in Rotary and Knights of Columbus.
Sidney High School presents its Junior Class play The Little Dog Laughed next Tuesday at 8. The three act comedy uses a staged setting with three locations over a living room outside entrance and a street. The cast includes Janice Weber Laur ie and many named students with Vergal Winn directing.
The community hospital fund raising campaign extended to Tuesday as weather and road conditions hindered reach to prospects. Thursday's total reached 260 thousand with 1 215 subscribers. advance gifts and rural areas show strong potential to push past the 300 thousand goal.
4-H members and leaders receive awards at a covered dish banquet with a program at 8 pm led by Miss Mary Ann Rufenacht of Lodgepole. Violet Shepherd and Ivan Liljegren will announce top rankings as community singing and folk dancing follow, amid nationwide 4-H success figures.
