Snowstorm Brings Crucial Moisture to Western Nebraska Wheat
A five to twelve inch snow blanket spread across western Nebraska on Monday, bringing moisture that farmers hope will help wheat stands survive a harsh winter. Observers reported varied measurements from five inches to close to a foot, with moisture content from a half to an inch. Eastern Nebraska crops had suffered while the Panhandle escaped October snows. Roads saw drifting but no major closures, and farmers used chains and shovels as tractors aided travel. Livestock owners welcomed meadow moisture despite the extra feeding work. The storm cooler but did not trigger unseasonable temperatures.
