Highway Closing Opposed in Kimball I-80 Hearing

About 50 residents attended an Interstate 80 hearing on a design to join I-80 with Highway 30 from Kimball southeast to Potter. Opponents argued abandoning Highway 30 would shift traffic to county roads and raise upkeep costs. Dan Ramsey called for further study amid mixed support for the plan.

Two New Wells and Discovery Reported in Nebraska OGC Notes

Two Cheyenne County wildcat oil tests No 2 Allington and No 1 Gade were permitted by the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission with Howard Kaler as operator and Gear Drilling Co. as contractor. The commission also noted a Kimball County discovery about a mile from Cheyenne County. Continental Resources recovered 460 feet of oil at No 1 Richards Estate in Sec 33-13-53 and will pursue completion after initial test packer issues.

The five state area of The Great Western Sugar Company posts near record sugarbeet payments. Robert R. Owen, president of the Denver subsidiary, says the initial 1970 crop payment totals 51.3 million dollars, the second highest in history. Payments will be mailed today.

Vernon born May 20 1900 in Olin Iowa. moved to Peetz 40 years ago and farmed until retirement. Survived by widow Grace Kaifer Vernon son Robert of Kimball daughter Katherine Zwicki and grandchildren plus two step grandchildren and three great grandchildren etc. He was a member of United Methodist Church and Elks Lodge.

Suzanne Mae Talich of Sidney was crowned 1971 queen of the Nebraska Wyoming Wheat Growers Association at the Scottsbluff convention banquet.
