Council delays hearings on paving assessments in Sidney

Sidney council postpones the paving district 118 hearing to December 12 to allow two appraisals of district property. City manager Merle Strouse says landowner concerns about assessment values prompted the delay. The agenda also includes open burning ban, truck parking rule change, downtown lighting and free parking, a pedestrian overpass study, rail traffic inquiries, and appointment of a city electrical inspector.

Chadron State seeks artifacts to display college roots

Chadron State College aims to collect items from its early days for a display in the Administration building. Train Derailment Near Lexington Prompts NTSB Probe

A 69 car derailment of an 118 car Union Pacific eastbound freight seven miles east of Lexington caused extensive damage with no injuries. A broken wheel is cited. six derailed cars were empty and others carried perishable goods. Westbound track reopened and eastbound service to resume by Sunday evening.

Experience Is Demanded In October Job Service Report

The Sidney Nebraska Job Service office reports a tight labor market in October with 205 job seekers in Cheyenne Deuel and Kimball counties, up from 199. Placements rose to 131 including 88 men 43 women and 32 veterans with 11 Vietnam era veterans. Most placements were in transportation followed by structural and bench trades. A Job Service representative will meet employers and job seekers in Deuel County Courthouse Chappell Dec 1 at 1 pm and in Kimball County Courthouse Assembly Room Dec 8 at 1 pm.

Smith urges new markets to raise farm profits at Wheatgrowers meet

Congresswoman Virginia Smith told the Nebraska Wheatgrowers Association in Scottsbluff that the government won’t raise farm prices. She urged expanding markets, noted higher processing costs take more of the food dollar, and discussed talks with Soviet officials about grain sales.
