Council delays hearings on paving assessments in Sidney
Sidney council postpones the paving district 118 hearing to December 12 to allow two appraisals of district property. City manager Merle Strouse says landowner concerns about assessment values prompted the delay. A 69 car derailment of an 118 car Union Pacific eastbound freight seven miles east of Lexington caused extensive damage with no injuries. A broken wheel is cited. six derailed cars were empty and others carried perishable goods. Westbound track reopened and eastbound service to resume by Sunday evening.

The Sidney Nebraska Job Service office reports a tight labor market in October with 205 job seekers in Cheyenne Deuel and Kimball counties, up from 199. Placements rose to 131 including 88 men 43 women and 32 veterans with 11 Vietnam era veterans. Most placements were in transportation followed by structural and bench trades. A Job Service representative will meet employers and job seekers in Deuel County Courthouse Chappell Dec 1 at 1 pm and in Kimball County Courthouse Assembly Room Dec 8 at 1 pm.
