KEARNEY The undefeated Lodgepole Panthers beat Elgin in straight sets 15-12 15-1 to open the state Class D volleyball tournament. Lodgepole advances to face the Shickley Arcadia winner at 10 45 a m Saturday. The finals are set for 5 15 p m Saturday at Cushing Coliseum.

Funeral fund incentive brings Hemingford band to parade
Hemingford High School Marching Band performed at the funeral of 80 year old Bill Mienke after he left a $500 bequest for the group in his will. About 50 band members marched two miles from the Methodist Church to the cemetery, wearing crimson uniforms and furry hats.
