A new brief snow storm swept across the Nebraska Panhandle with winds to 80 mph and frigid temperatures. Forecasters predicted one to three inches of snow and drifting in places. Snow may end tonight with heavier accumulations in the northeast. A 15 degree low is forecast for tomorrow night. Crop reports note some benefit to winter wheat from prior moisture, but more precipitation is needed statewide.

Oil man John Richard Smith dies in Cheyenne County crash
John Richard Smith 32, an oil field worker with Chandler-Musgrove Drilling Co, died in a head on collision with a Rogers Truck Line truck ten and one half miles north of Potter. The crash occurred about 11:30 after Smith's car struck a snow bank from a recent blizzard. Truck driver Lavern Betzinger of Sidney was uninjured. Smith's body was taken to Craig Mortuary and funeral arrangements were tentatively set for Friday or Saturday in Great Bend Kansas. Smith was born September 21 1924 in Hayes Center Kansas, son of Joh and Catherine Smith.

William Acheson 69 of Dix died Monday night at Kimball hospital after a long illness. Born February 27, 1889 in Jewell County Kansas he moved from Carpenter to Dix in 1921. He married Mabel Camp May 17 1911 at Superior. Survived by his wife son Clyde and brother Cal all of Dix. Services set for Thursday at 2 PM at Dix Presbyterian Church.
