A pen north of Kimball released 94 pheasants that fled into town during hunting season, finding safety inside city limits where firearms are illegal. Hunters noted tame birds approaching people, while rearing operations and plans to stock the county after season were described by the Kimball Junior Wildlife Club.

Two Car Crashes Logged Near Sidney on Friday
Officials reported two separate two car crashes near Sidney Friday with total damage estimated in the hundreds of dollars. At 1 20 p m Leslie Johnson 61 and Thelma Main 28 both of Sidney collided at a county road and Highway 30 east of Sidney when the Main car turned onto the county road. At 4 28 p m Eleanor M Hyde 63 Lodgepole and Harold D Short 23 SOD collided at Jackson Street and 37th Avenue. No injuries were reported.

A Winchester 12 gauge shotgun was stolen from a car parked Friday night in front of The Mill. The theft was reported to Sidney police by Earl Whetstone.

Patrolman Arrests North Platte Escapee in Nebraska
Patrolman Del Shipley stopped a California licensed car west of Lodgepole on Highway 30 to warn the driver about speeding. In the rear seat was Harold Simmons, 16, an escapee from the Nebraska Training School for Boys at Kearney. Simmons, from Scottsbluff, had stolen a car in Kearney after fleeing the school and allegedly broke into several homes, then a Cozad body shop, before abandoning the stolen vehicle in North Platte. He had been committed for auto thefts statewide, including an incident in Sidney.

Speeder Loses His License For Year Four Convictions

Soil Bank Retires Vast Wheat Land Amid 1957 Plan
Agriculture Department reports farmers signed agreements to retire 10.67 million acres from the 1957 wheat crop under the soil bank program. Eligible for about 197.65 million dollars in payments, the acreage cut comes from a 55 million acre production allotment reducing output by roughly 200 million bushels. The 1957 crop, grown on about 50 million acres, yielded around 930 million bushels.

County officials Friday completed tabulation of 121 absentee ballots in the 1956 general election. Eisenhower led with 93 votes, Stevenson 28, and the courthouse bond issue would have passed 72 to 44. Total ballots pushed Cheyenne County turnout to 5,919 of 6,409 in 1952.
