Democratic Governor R. L. Cochran defeats Charles J. Warner by about 17 000 votes in a statewide GOP landslide that leaves Democrats with only two seats in the state house. Four Thousand Ton Beet Crop Expected Through Local Station
The Sidney beet crop yields are projected at about 16 tons per acre across 250 acres, totaling around four thousand tons at the Great Western Sugar Company station in Sidney. Manager M. S. Sizemore Funeral Held For L F Sizemore 32
Leonard Floyd Sizemore aged 32 died after a six month illness at home in the southeast Sidney district. He was born in Phillips South Dakota on September 23 1906 and lived in Cheyenne County 22 years before moving to Glen Rock Wyoming to ranch work. Survivors include his parents four brothers and a sister. Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Sidney with burial at Greenwood Cemetery.

Woman attempts suicide aboard Union Pacific train near Ogallala
Sultana Ades, 45, of 547 California Street San Francisco, tried to kill herself on a westbound Union Pacific passenger train. She slashed both wrists and attempted hanging in a washroom after which she was treated at Roche Hospital in shock. Attendants said her condition is favorable. She had just returned from Palestine and had planned the act for months, with despondency blamed.

Walter R. Raecke of Central City, grand master of Nebraska Masons, led the keynote. H. L. Sam, charter member and second degree master, outlined the chapter’s origins. Winfield Evans, charter member and third master, was noted for his 48 years in the order and Jordan medal.

Former Sidney Boy Found Dead In Car At Lincoln
James L Hand Jr eighteen resident of Sidney until two months ago found dead in a closed car in an unoccupied Lincoln garage Monday morning. Lincoln City Physician Dr. P S Cannon reports death likely between 2 and 3 AM from monoxide gas. The car licensed to Midwest Combine and Tractor Co belonged to Hand’s father, the Lincoln and Sidney company manager. The Hands had moved back to Lincoln recently. Hand found by realty employee Guy Porter after he noticed a car in a vacant garage. The ignition was off, heater running but cold. Investigators deem death accidental. Hand and Roberta Jackson of Sidney had wed secretly August 29 in Harrisburg. He was a 1937 Sidney high school graduate and is survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. James L Hand and one sister Marylyn.

County Joins State Beat Slot Machines Vote Defeated
Cheyenne county voters joined the state in rejecting a proposed constitutional amendment to legalize slot machines for the old age pension fund. In eighteen precincts the tally was 2255 to 817 against legalization. Repeal of the double liability law for bank stock was narrowly favored, 1316 to 1160. Four amendments to shorten the ballot were also considered with one defeat 1249 to 844.

Ernest Koops Recalls His War Wound and Bullet
Ernest Koops, longtime Mayfair Service Station manager, recalls a WWI bullet lodged in his left thigh for 22 years. He was wounded in the Champagne sector after stringing barbed wire, later held as a prisoner by the Allies from 1917 to 1919, and moved to America in 1921. About two years ago a lump appeared, then last July he extracted a two inch steel bullet from the lump.

October Traffic Deaths Set Nebraska Record
Nebraska recorded 15 traffic fatalities in October 1937, a 63 percent drop from last year and the lowest monthly toll this year besides April. Captain R F Weller of the Nebraska Safety Patrol cited heavy autumn travel for the month, noting a 31 percent year to date reduction from 1937 totals with 187 deaths through October versus 272 in 1936.

Weather was favorable for election day but turnout was light. About 3500 ballots were cast across 18 precincts, far below the 4400+ tally two years ago, though enough ballots were printed to handle up to 5200 votes.
Miller Holds Light Margin Over Green
A. L. Miller of Kimball leads Charles D. Green of Sidney by 104 votes in the 43rd district unicameral race with all four counties reporting. Green still has a slim chance after mail ballots, but victory is unlikely. Unofficial totals: Kimball Miller 1250 Green 522 Morrill Green 1278 Miller 1255 Banner Miller 424 Green 158 Cheyenne Green 2111 Miller 1244. The close race only settled after Morrill county reported Wednesday.

Sypherd Nabbed On Theft Suspicions In Nebraska
State Patrolman Oltman arrested Sypherd and Don Stone after a five mile chase west of Sidney for suspected car theft linked to Hastings. Victim car, with Nebraska dealer plates, was found after the duo reportedly drove south to Pleasanton then to Sidney. Potter precinct finished counting first and reported totals to the county clerk before 10 30 PM Tuesday. Sidney No 1, the county’s largest precinct, cast 531 ballots and reported near 5 AM Wednesday. Others like Lodge Pole Union Valley and Lorenzo followed, with Ezra Chambers noting travel hiccups and I L Pindell serving coffee and doughnuts to workers.
