Doctor surplus reports stir western Nebraska towns

The second part of a three part series examines health care in rural western Nebraska. A state report cites one doctor per 629 people nationwide and about one per 1,300 in the Panhandle, with local towns saying they are short of physicians or will be. Sidney and Scottsbluff face shortages as area doctors warn of potential crises with retirements. Efforts to attract new physicians include recruiting in medical schools, planning clinics, and even salary guarantees, but funding gaps hinder proposals in Morrill, Rushville, Oshkosh, Chappell, and other communities.

Doctor Shortage Persists in Nebraska Border Towns

In Pine Bluffs and Rushville efforts to recruit physicians continue as facilities struggle. Dan Blankenbiller notes the bid for Dr Garcia and Dr Dozon follows several years of National Health Service Corps doctors leaving after two year terms. Crawford gains relief with Dr Robert Hanlon who returned in 1975 boosting an ailing 16 bed hospital and daily patient load.

Observances close area offices for Veteran's Day

Several area firms and government agencies will be closed Thursday for the state observance of Veteran's Day. Sidney City Offices and Cheyenne County Court House close with county banks and the Sidney Public Library. The Post Office remains open with regular delivery. Agricultural Service Center in Sidney stays open all day.

Fund drive in Sidney seeks motorcycle for Don Duffy

A Sidney fund drive to buy a new motorcycle for paraplegic Don Duffy stages a campaign led by R. W Brown. The current bike has 20000 miles and is worn out. about 750 dollars are needed, with 60 collected so far. Donations may be left at the library, checks made out to the Duffy Fund. Duffy is recovering from surgery.

NRD board members to meet in Sidney

About 50 board members from Nebraska Natural Resources Districts will gather in Sidney on Monday and Tuesday November 15 and 16. They form the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts and will hear reports from operations, legislative, and research committees.

Fall harvest nears end in southern Panhandle and northeastern Colorado

Farmers report above average corn and sugar beet yields with 400 acres of beets in Cheyenne County. Beets yielded 18 to 23 tons per acre and sugar content around 16 to 174 percent. Wheat also mixed, prices around $2.10 per bushel. much corn fed on farms. Weather worries include drought, wind, and potential erosion. farmers hope for moisture.

Sidney school board weighs band rental and surplus sale

The board raised band instrument rental to 7.50 per semester while authorizing sale of surplus materials including desks, dictionaries, instruments, and a warming basin. Traffic safety near South Elementary will be reviewed with city officials and a common library catalog with the city library is planned for winter break.

Nebraska Public Service Commission set hearing dates for Star Aviation and Pioneer Airways to start daily passenger service from Denver to Alliance Sidney Chadron and to serve towns along the Panhandle to Omaha.
