Two press releases from the Sioux Ordnance Depot near Sidney report large scale operations continuing. Civil Service announces immediate need for several hundred workers in 35 classifications with wages from 1 cent to 99 cents per hour. Veterans receive preference and applications are available at post offices.
Harold F Benjamin Social Security Board manager will visit the United States Employment Service Office 842 17th Ave Sidney at 9 am Wednesday November 14. Workers in covered industry since January 1 1937 may request a Post Card Form OAR 7004 to obtain a statement of wages credited to their Social Security account noting all wages except the six months prior to the request. Forms OAR 7004 also available by written request.
The annual Potter Community Sale will be held Thursday November 15 starting at 1 PM at the Hagemister Lumber Yard. Auctioneers Elmer Kath and Joe Schwartz will oversee, with E. W. Eberle managing the event and a large list of articles already assured.
The War Department urges sending Christmas greeting cards to soldiers overseas in sealed envelopes at first class rate and prepaid. Cards mailed now are expected to reach even remote APOs by December 25, according to the Army Postal Service.
State Tax Commissioner Robert Armstrong reported that no clocks or watches were listed on Banner county personal property tax rolls last spring. The office notes Cheyenne county stoves are assessed higher than any other county and warns stove owners will push back at the assessors.
During November 11 to 17 nationwide schools observe National Education Week with the 1945 theme Education to Promote the General Welfare. Sidney schools invite parent visitors, with open houses at Frances Willard, North Ward, and Sidney High School on November 15 from 2 45 to 5 00, plus grade projects on Indians and Book Week and safety films by Patrolman Hailey. Parents urged to attend to show support for American youth and peace through education.
The Armistice Day dance at the city auditorium will be held Monday November 12. The American Legion sponsors the public event with Bark er’s orchestra, starting at nine o'clock and ending a day of activities for World War I and II veterans.
The Canadian geese are moving south this week and Sidney hunters are in pursuit. Most birds have been shot on the tablelands north and south of the North Platte river with some good kills reported from river blinds. Anticipation builds for a weekend exodus to top goose shooting spots and a peak next week.
County Assessor J. H. Foster notes individuals in Cheyenne county excluding businesses held cash totaling 1.5 million on the 1945 assessments. He says this highlights lay personal wealth, not business funds or war bonds, which are estimated at eight to ten million dollars. He adds the figures reflect precincts’ effort to list intangible assets, with wide gaps between similar holdings.
Oil men of Cheyenne county will gather at the auditorium tonight at 8 p m to discuss taxes on motorists and the petroleum industry. John A. Ainlay of the Nebraska Petroleum Industries Committee says the open meeting is mandatory for those who want to stay in business in the state, with no obligation to attend or join. He notes in 1941 motorists paid more than 60 percent of state revenue when gas taxes and vehicle fees are counted.
Rankan Ewers pleaded guilty to failure to grant right of way in a two-vehicle collision at Potter last week injuring a woman. Mrs. Pearl B. Bennie of St. Louis recovering. Dale Craig bounced a no fund check for ten dollars. court costs totaled 26.92. Floyd Perry Kimball charged with reckless driving paid ten dollars plus costs. County Judge Barlow and Judge Robert A. Barlow presided.
The Sioux Villa rental status remains unclear as Congressman A L Miller reports conflicting figures to the chamber of commerce. Miller cites 30 of 50 units occupied, three applications on file and 17 spaces, with National Housing Agency notes that standby units could be opened for servicemen or war workers, requiring Federal approval amid local concerns of housing shortages and a three quarter empty $400000 monument.
Sidney's Maroons meet Chappell on Armistice Day at Chappell field with a 2 pm kickoff in a crucial test. Chappell, coached by George Miller, has rose to top form late in the season, while Sidney, under Leo Shuman, seeks a decisive victory to strengthen its statewide standing. A large Sidney contingent is expected if weather allows as both teams aim to stay in contention.
The Alliance-Times-Herald notes fifty five irrigation wells in Box Butte county near Alliance, irrigating about 11,000 acres. REA power and midrange land values are spurring major farming expansion, with electrified pumping seen as the best long term investment. Land prices expected to rise sharply as irrigation spreads and new farmers settle the Lodgepole Valley and Sidney Draw.
Farmers from Cheyenne and Potter counties toured Deuel soil conservation districts to view dryland practices. Twelve demonstration farms were visited with officials from SCS, FSA and extension, including J F Mintken L R Carey C Edgar Leafdale Verlin and Arvin Livingston W H Sterling and George W Harmon.
Ralph Hammond, recently discharged after over three years in the U S Navy, spoke at Hazel’s party room on Navy firefighting methods. He outlined fire dangers from gasoline and oil on carriers and recalled a Ticonderoga hangar fire after two suicide plane hits, which was controlled within an hour saving the ship. Rev Walter Jewett, new Sidney Methodist minister, shared chaplain duties from Trinidad off Venezuela.
M. H. Robineau of Cheyenne Frontier Refining Co. said Tuesday a new Wyoming oil field appeared proven after a wildcat well at Zimmerman Butte near Lucerne was brought in. Pacific Western Oil Corp. of Los Angeles is a partner in the joint venture.
County Chairman W. P. Ackerman reports Cheyenne County’s National War Fund Drive lags due to precincts failing to meet shares. Brownson North Sidney Eagle and Huntsman listed as disappointing. Some precincts performed well. Ackerman urges non-givers to contribute to reach the county goal.

The United States Army opens a recruiting office at Scotts Bluff under Lt. F. X. Hoel scher. Recruiters will visit Sidney every Tuesday, with Mondays in Kimball and Wednesdays in Bridgeport. Special enlistment inducements target World War II veterans discharged since May 12.
Sidney sets Armistice Day events for Monday November 12 starting with a 10 am parade forming on 11th avenue by the auditorium led by the American Legion color guard. Veterans of World Wars I and II invited. Rev. Walter Jewett to speak at 10:45 in the city auditorium. Includes servicemen’s dinner, Auxiliary dinner, football at Chappell, and a 9 pm Armistice Day dance with Barker’s orchestra. About 200 World War II vets have returned to Cheyenne county to join the observance.
The weekly report from the State Federal Bureau of Agricultural Statistics says winter wheat fall sown grass and pastures need moisture. The week ended Monday marked the fifth straight dry week since September. Corn picking began in earnest last week, with mechanical pickers hampered by the dry weather. Potatoes nearly finished in Western Nebraska late districts with yields trimmed by an early frost. Sugar beet harvests advancing with labor supply improving.
The American Legion club rooms will open at 11 30 a m Monday November 12 for Armistice Day observance. The public is invited to use the facilities at any time during the day or evening. The lounge and other accommodations will be available. Returning World War II veterans their families and friends are specially invited.
Capacity crowds packed the Altar Society annual bazaar and dinner at St. Patrick's auditorium. Seats were sold out before six each Wednesday and Thursday, forcing latecomers to stand in line. The ladies prepared the usual delicious dinner.
