Cheyenne County Votes Seen With Four Thousand Expected

Cheyenne County prepares for the 1970 general election with polls open eight to eight Tuesday. Absentee Ballots Sent For Cheyenne County Election

The Cheyenne County Clerk Ralph Englert reports 66 absentee ballots have been sent for the November 3 election. Ballots must be postmarked by midnight November 2 and received in the clerk's office by 10 a.m. Thursday November 5.

Census Goes Up In County As Family Of 13 Relocates

The Popken family from Palisade Nebraska, a mother and father with eleven children aged five months to sixteen years, moved to a five mile west Sidney farm purchased from Charles Schmitt. Dale Katen Agency handled the sale. Mr Popken, an eleven-year veteran herdsman for Schroader Cattle Co, plans to develop the property into an irrigated pasture stocked with cattle and hogs.

Western Plains Auction buyers bid as market shows weakness

The second regular sale at Western Plains Auction Co. drew a smaller crowd due to the Nebraska-Colorado game but strong bidding on steer calves to $42 and cows to $21 kept spirits high. Sunday horse sale drew $13 to $475, with good broke horses selling well. I-80 opening to Chappell near term. Oshkosh bridge to car traffic only by late Tuesday.

Train And Pickup Collision Near Lodgepole

Sidney man Richard E. Carmen 25 narrowly escaped injury when his southbound pickup was struck by a Union Pacific freight train while crossing railroad tracks two miles west and a tenth of a mile south of Lodgepole. He said he did not see the train until on the tracks and attempted to flee. The left side of the truck was crushed and Carmen was hospitalized in Sidney with bruises and cuts.

Grass fire east of Browns damages none

Sidney volunteers responded to a grass fire one mile east of Browns on Sunday at 1 17 p m. Burning weeds got out of control. fire crews contained the blaze with no damage reported on property owned by Western Nebraska Vo Tech School.

Light snow and cold conditions covered a large Panhandle area this morning. Roads remained slick with a forecast to stay that way. At noon the temperature reached 30, with a low of 20, and measurable moisture totaled 0.01 inch. A trace of moisture fell Friday and Saturday.

300 Enroll At Vo Tech

After one week of winter quarter registration at Western Nebraska Vocational Technical School 300 students enrolled including 200 in day classes and 100 in evening classes. Students come from eight states including Kansas Colorado Wyoming Montana North Dakota South Dakota Idaho New York and Nebraska. A new oil discovery was reported in Morrill County near Bridgeport with Knight and Miller Oil Corp and Norris Oil Co drilling No. 1 Sherlock. Services For Former SAD Employee Set

Manuel Jiminez 58, a former Sioux Army Depot worker, died last weekend at Veterans Hospital in Cheyenne Wyoming after about a month as a patient. Funeral rites are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Scottsbluff with burial in Fairview Cemetery. The Rosary is 8 p.m. tonight at Benson-Jolliffe Funeral Home. Jiminez, born April 15 1912 in Marfa Texas moved to Scottsbluff in 1926 and joined the army in 1941. He served in the European Theatre including South Africa Sicily and Italy and returned to Scottsbluff in 1945. He moved to Sidney in 1959 worked at Sioux Army Depot until 1967 when health forced retirement then returned to Scottsbluff. Surviving: brother Frank of Juarez Mexico half brother Joe Ramos in California four sisters Casimire Nabarro Scottsbluff Petra del Toro Los Angeles Gregoria Torres El Paso Texas and Blassa Peredes Porgresso Mexico plus his parents one brother and two sisters.
