The Sioux Army Depot near Sidney Nebraska will close on June 30 after a 25 year active life. At its peak more than two thousand workers were employed. now about 600 remain as the post winds down and land may be repurposed for farming, grazing, and new regional enterprises.

John D. Schlesselman 85 died Monday night at Memorial Hospital Cheyenne County after a month as a patient. Funeral services set for 2 PM Friday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul W. Reimers of Potter officiating. Interment Greenwood Cemetery. Gehrig & Son Funeral Home in charge. Survived by son Fred of Sidney. daughters Elaine Nelson Sidney Ardis Evans Kearns Utah Esther Ernest Wortland Wyoming. two half brothers Fred Drake William Dangelo Seward. foster daughter Annie Waites Seward. 11 grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife Margaret Lippstreit 1940 and several siblings.
The third annual Mari Sandoz Essay Contest results are with the judges. Thirty three finalists compete for first prize a week at a Nebraska state park and Mari Sandoz works for the winner and school. Finalists include Robert Robinson of Sidney and Sandra Anderson and Patti Peonio of Broadwater.
Congressman Dave Martin announces that the General Services Administration will assign water and sewage facilities at Sioux Army Depot near Sidney to the Department of Health, Education and Welfare for conveyance to the City of Sidney. The system may supply water and sewage treatment to other institutions.
Rain halts progress on the airport runway and courthouse projects in a semi arid region. Weather forecasts warn of continued wet conditions for several days, delaying construction and affecting schedules.

Potter's 14th annual rodeo offers an estimated 3200 dollars in purse money and entry fees for competition on June 3 and 4 at 1 30 p m. over 150 entries expected in saddle and bareback bronc riding calf roping steer wrestling bull riding and team roping. Last year 155 entries earned 3275 dollars with Les Gore of Laramie winning steer wrestling and tying for first in bareback bronc riding.
Scout Wheat, first available for fall 1964 plantings, has become the leading variety across Nebraska Kansas Colorado and Wyoming. A University of Nebraska program released the last resistant high yielding line in 1963 to counter a black stem rust race that cost farmers 44 million bushels in 1959 to 1962. The new Scout variety covered 4 295 000 acres or 21.1 percent of last fall's planted area in the four states.
Lawrence II, Brachtenbach awarded Memorial Hospital and Home enlargement project with a bid of $193,210. The contract was approved by the board of directors, work to begin in June and a completion deadline set for February 25, 1968.
Mrs James E Skrdlant of Sidney Nebraska is chosen by the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben as one of Nebraskas good neighbors. She and 45 others will receive the annual award for neighborly deeds. Nomination by David W Young KSID notes her decade as St Pats Sidney scorekeeper and her efforts transporting students to away games. Ambassador Dr C B Dorwart will present the award at a date to be set.
Subtropical showers and cool, cloudy conditions drench the area with heavy rains through Thursday. Easterly winds 10 to 20 mph, rain chances 80 percent this afternoon, then 70 percent tonight and Thursday. Five day outlook: temperatures 2-8 degrees below normal, highs near 70, lows in 40s, with scattered showers and thundershowers.
Sidney High School announces Larry Pippitt as the new instrumental music director for the coming year. A 1958 SHS graduate, he earned a BA in music from the University of Wyoming in 1962 and is pursuing a master’s at Colorado State College in Greeley. He previously directed bands at Hay Center Nebraska and led music at Eaton Colorado.
4 H club members ages 9 to 12 may attend the Chy Ba Ki Mo camp at Cheyenne County Fair grounds June 13 to 15 with a $5 50 registration and a parent signed health statement due at the extension office by June 5 If unable to visit the office a phone call can arrange mailing of the health certificate The District 4 H Camp for ages 12 and older will be held June 26 to 28 at the State 4 H Camp in Halsey for members from Box Butte Dawes Cheyenne Scotts Bluff Sheridan and Sioux Counties Entry blanks are available at the extension office.
A New Jersey jury found Roberta Seefeldt guilty of first degree murder in the December killing of Marine Sergeant Gerald Seefeldt at Lakehurst Naval Air Station. The couple, married less than a month, faced a life sentence. debate over self defense was rejected after 11 days of testimony.
The Kansas City ASCS Commodity Office bought about 5.7 million bushels of wheat on the open market for donation to nine countries under the Food for Freedom program. Purchases averaged $1.79 to $1.90 per bushel with handling costs. Countries listed include Korea India Morocco Algeria Turkey Iraq Taiwan Syria and Afghanistan. Chairman Hans O. Jensen said the move reduces CCC stock movement and supports emergency aid.
Sidneyites enjoyed a largely quiet Memorial Day with two minor accidents reported. On Monday at 2 15 p m at 10th and Illinois Jeffrey Sprenger 21 of Sidney was eastbound and turning onto 10th when rear ended by Michael Kennedy 16 also of Sidney. No injuries or damage estimates reported. The second incident occurred Tuesday after 1 p m when Dwane Nightingale 61 of Sidney parked by Osage Grocery and was struck by Irene Hall 47 of Sidney as Hall backed from the lot. No damage estimates available.
The Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission issued a memorandum detailing changes from Legislative Bills 646 and 647. LB 646 adds a 100 dollar filing fee for public hearing petitions and took effect May 12 with an emergency clause. LB 647 requires Form 4 notices and a 25 dollar advance fee for well abandonment when production casing is in the hole, effective May 12.
