The Nebraska Panhandle shifted from drought to moisture in six weeks as fields remain flooded and planting slows. Rainfall totals exceeded an inch in many towns with some reports near two inches, easing fears for winter wheat and irrigated crops while machines bogged in mud delay fieldwork.
Ray Bert Robinson was bound over to District Court on a charge of assaulting a law officer while in the line of duty. He struck Trooper Kenneth C. Thompson during an incident west of Sidney and was subdued. Robinson earlier faced resisting arrest and intoxication charges, receiving a $150 fine and five days in jail, with bond set at $1,000. Police found several stolen credit cards on him.
Five people sustained minor injuries in a Wednesday afternoon collision at 15th and Jackson. Robert Casteel and his three children were treated and released at Memorial Hospital, while eight year old David Crutchfield was seen at a local doctor's office and released. No damage estimates were available for either vehicle.
Rep. Martin reveals 66.5 percent of Nebraska 3rd District respondents favor an all-out military victory in Vietnam from 68,000 mailed questionnaires. He highlights support for his anti monopoly bill, child tax exemption, and opposition to Social Security increases, with strong demand for local control and a popular vote for president.
Libbie Walters 86 died Friday in North Platte after long Cheyenne County residence. She moved to Lodgepole in 1912 and retired from farming in 1935. Survived by five sons, three daughters, 12 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Services Monday 2 PM at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Husband preceded her May 30 1963.
Lincoln hearing gathers farmers and leaders with USDA in a series on 1968 wheat acreage allotments. Art Thompson represented Secretary Freeman as the Agriculture Department considers about 59.3 million acres for 1968, down from 68 million. Nebraska growers resist cuts, urging export policy to sustain current acreage and a strategic reserve linked to population growth. Friehe of McCook, Nebraska Wheat Commission, backs maintaining parity prices and a certificate system within the program.
The Saddle Club sponsors the All Breeds Horse Show on Sunday June 18 at Cheyenne County Fairgrounds. Halter classes for mares, stallions and geldings in morning, afternoon features performance classes. Trophies and ribbons were shown at the May 31 club meeting with 25 members and two guests Muriel Evans and Kathy Bennett. Attendance at Camp Laramie Peak in Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming is set to exceed prior records with 750 boys across 52 troops registered for five weeks this summer. Opening day June 18 will bring 11 troops and 150 scouts, with ongoing training and new facilities including a lake and a camp program center.
Forecasters predict considerable cloudiness this afternoon becoming partly cloudy tonight and Saturday. Expect scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms with winds 10 to 20 mph. The Road E O finals, postponed by rain, will be held this Sunday afternoon. Ben Belden, president of the Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce, says the Jaycees and Gibson Ford-Mercury co sponsor the event. Contestants run an obstacle course on the street near the Sidney youth registration area. the public is invited to watch.
May air traffic at Sidney Airport remained strong despite runway work. Frontier Airlines local manager Dale Kindred said May boardings were well below the 150 quota but higher than expected given socked in weather and ongoing construction and the expected arrival of jet prop Convairs.
Officers of the Nebraska Music Educators Association will meet at Sidney Junior High School all day Saturday to formulate plans for the State Music Clinic to be held here in November. Ronald Becker of Scottsbluff is president of the association.
Cheyenne County Fair Board and Centennial committee outlined a five day Aug 19 to Aug 23 program featuring the Trail Ride rerun, Johnny Ringo appearances, the largest regional antique car rally, 60 floats, 11 bands, and a big barbecue. The schedule includes 4-H judging, open class shows, beard contests, parades, rodeo, and a Centennial dance. Ends with exhibits release and community activities across Sidney and Dalton area towns.
Potter's fourteenth annual rodeo runs Saturday and Sunday at 1 30 at the Potter rodeo grounds. Hadley Benett will announce the RCA approved event featuring five events plus jackpot team roping and GA A approved girls barrel racing. A dance Saturday night at the Legion Hall adds to the lineup.
Airman Eugene P. Fraass USN son of Mr and Mrs Paul H Fraass Lodgepole ranks among the top ten percent of the May 11 1967 Lakehurst New Jersey graduating class. His ABE rating training prepares him for pivotal work in launching and recovery systems aboard aircraft carriers. He attended Chadron State College before enlisting in November 1966.
Planning for a re run of the Sidney Black Hills trail ride is active with events set to start in Deadwood on August 16 and finish in Sidney on August 21. The ride features a horse race and a caravan of stage coaches wagons and riders. If successful this year the event may become annual.
