Nebraska's 2.5 percent sales tax takes effect at midnight, broadening the tax base. Exemptions include newspapers, medicines, meals in schools or hospitals, utilities for farming, professional services, and wages. Taxable items cover most tangible goods, admissions, groceries, clothing, and rentals under 30 days.
Nebraska Panhandle and high plains receive record moisture through May. Totals show Potter 4.65 inches, Gurley 4.59, FAA station 3.77 at Sidney, Dalton 2.97, Lodgepole 2.96 with heavy May 3 4 and later rains. Ground greens, but roads become impassable. rural carriers slide into ditches amid saturated soils.
Former Specialist Five Paul W. Fehringer of Peetz Colorado was awarded the Air Medal at Fort Carson for his actions as a UH-1B crew chief during July in the Han River Valley east of Seoul. He helped evacuate about 170 people, keeping order as he loaded passengers and remaining on the ground to prevent panic through the mission. Fehringer has since returned and farms near Peetz. The award was conferred by Maj Gen Charles A Corcoran, commander of the 5th Infantry Division Fort Carson.
Pan-American Petroleum Corp. has secured a drilling permit for another oil test in the Harrisburg Field in Banner County. The location is Northwest Northwest Section 4 Township 18 Range 55, with the Harrisburg Unit at the Harrisburg townsite.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce invites bids for a souvenir and curio stand built on the fairgrounds west of town. The 18 by 38 foot rustic frame building would open by June 15 with a one year lease and five optional one year terms. No intoxicants may be sold and bids due Thursday at 10 am.
The commanding officer's home at old Ft Sidney was open for candle light tours Saturday night but will not be open every Saturday evening as indicated in a newspaper story last week. The Saturday night tour may be repeated but no date has been set.
Clifford O Jensen 55 died Saturday morning of a heart attack. He managed the Sioux Villa Housing Authority and was a longtime Sidney business man and farmer. Funeral set for 10 a m Wednesday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenwood Cemetery burial, burial and memorials designated to Heart fund or Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Jay M. Hazelwood 25 died in a Cheyenne hospital after surgery. A lifelong Sidney resident and Laramie County teacher, he was born January 6 1942. Survived by wife Diane two sons his parents three sisters and two brothers. Funeral Wednesday at 2 30 from First Lutheran Potter. Burial Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials to Kearney State College scholarship fund.
Evelyn Woods reading dynamics promises speeds three to ten times faster than normal. Sessions Thursday and Friday nights outline the course in Room 105 at the senior high school from 6 30 to 8 15. A 1960 Ford wagon driven by P J Heaton Jr. left the highway near Chappell causing a boat to break free. damage to boat and trailer was about 1000 dollars with no injuries. A collision east of Sidney on U S 30 and State Highway 19 left Hart Vance with back pains and a total loss on the car. A 1962 Chevrolet driven by Patricia Hallett of Peetz Colo struck a 1962 Ford driven by George White near Sidney on a county road.
Preliminary work on expansion of The Egging Co. plant southeast of Gurley continues. Ted Egging, president, reports land levelling is progressing, cables are being buried, an underground water system is installed with a large storage tank to serve it.
Senator Carl Curtis told the Interior Department Nebraska faces severe effects from the national drop in oil exploration. He urged not to raise import quotas, noting wells fell from 910 in 1959 to 292 last year and wildcat wells from 410 to 176, while 10 million acres remained leased. He warned higher imports could slow domestic reserves.
Senator George H. Fleming of Sidney reports the Legislature reconvenes after Memorial Day for hot debates on LB448 school aid and the general budget. He notes a $200000 boost for the Western Nebraska Vocational Technical School and honors Sen. Fern Hubbard Orme for aiding the Sidney vo tech, including an airplane mechanics program set for July 1.
Weather and bad roads reduced consignments for the Saturday sale at the Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion though good prices were achieved. Buyers paid 24.70 to 26.25 for 158 heifers 466 to 658 pounds, 28.10 to 31.25 for some steel calves, and 26.60 for 576 pound roan steers. Baby calves sold 32 to 41, beef cows 16.75 to 17.45, light bulls 20 to 25, and thin cull cows 11. Hog market weakened with Memorial Day packer shutdown. hogs 200 to 270 pounds 20.25 to 21.10, heavy sows 16 to 17, feeder pigs 17 to 24, smaller pigs 13 to 15.50.

The Western Nebraska Vocational Technical School in Sidney gains eligibility for a United Student Aid Fund loan program offering up to 1500 dollars for six quarters. A new airplane mechanics course starts July 1, aided by state aeronautics officials. Budget prospects improve with a legislative committee adding 200000 to Gov Tiemann's recommended sum for a total of 776420, funding the school.
A farm policy session will be held in Ogallala from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday June 2 at the Elks Lodge. Hans O Jensen chairman of the Nebraska ASC says the gathering aims to gauge county area and state leaders views and report findings to Secretary Orville Freeman. Cheyenne County ASC officials expect attendance from local farmers and leaders to share thoughts and recommendations.

Tonight lows near 50 and highs Tuesday around 60. Rain chances 60 percent this afternoon 70 percent tonight and 60 percent Tuesday. Five day outlook calls for average temperatures about 40 degrees below normal with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s with scattered afternoon and evening storms.
