City considers long range use of a 42 acre tract east of the park acquired from Union Pacific. City Manager Coffey urged planning for future water needs and potential park expansion or industrial, trade school inducement. Council discussed budget items and baseball facility needs, with a later decision pending.
Memorial Day services will be sponsored by veteran groups in five Cheyenne County communities this Saturday. A 10 a.m. dedicatory program at the Fort Sidney Historical Monument east of Sidney will kick off the day. Sidney holds a 9:30 a.m. parade from 13th and Illinois, ending at the monument with a 20 minute program led by VFW Legion color guard and Sidney High musicians. Greenwood Cemetery hosts a 10:30 a.m. event with Capt. John B. Kincaid as main speaker and wreath by Legion and VFW leaders. Other towns Potter Lodgepole Dalton Gurley schedule 10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. memorial rites with local officials, clergy, and veterans groups. A burial capsule and unknown soldier ceremonies cap the day in Lodgepole and other sites.
Maj. Carroll and family depart Rolla Missouri for Thailand where he will serve on the American Military Advisory Staff. He arrived in August 1962 as resident engineer for the U S Corps of Engineers on the Minuteman missile project and has lived in the Country Club Heights area. The Thai assignment places him in an inter service operation with the U S Navy directing construction programs.
Former Cheyenne County residents were victims in a Fontenelle Reservoir boating tragedy near Fontenelle Wyoming last weekend. Edward Bud Curry 26 of Big Piney his wife Jodie 21 and Mrs Glenn Howerter 43 of Rock Springs drowned. Missing and presumed drowned are Glenn Howerter 44 and the Currys two children Ricky 2 and Lorie 14 months. Family members in Sidney Fort Collins Aurora and Loveland await news as divers sonar aid search. Currys and Howerters bodies recovered while other boat occupants are still missing. Officials planned resumed searches when water calms. The accident involvement ties to Halliburton Oil Service with local kinship ties across multiple towns.
Cheyenne County Fair Board of Sidney reports a $500 grant from Ak-Sar-Ben to remodel the cattle and sheep barn. The gift is part of the eleven year County Fair Improvement Program funded by Ak-Sar-Ben from its annual race meeting and matches local funds.
The Sidney Telegraph reports farmers who diverted acres may try a new oil seed crop named Cranby but Cranby cannot be planted on diverted acres. Safflower remains the only applicable substitute in this state, with no diversion payment for safflower acreage.
Akron Colorado June 12 field day at the Central Great Plains Field Station will explore wheat varieties barley types and soil moisture use in dryland farming. Highlights include a summer fallow demonstration a drill box planting test and a session with Hybrid Wheat and the Wheat Improvement Program in Colorado led by Dr Byrd Curtis. O.E. Hays supervises arrangements with tours starting at 9 30 a.m.
Arlys Boese named valedictorian for the 1964 Sidney High School class. Kristin Bitner named salutatorian with extensive service in NHS FTA Girls Athletic Association and band. Barbara Holms named class orator, ranked third, with leadership in Masque and Gavel and stage roles.
N C Bud Livoni former Sidney resident was found dead in Denver today. His brother Donald of Littleton reports no other details. Livoni lived in Sidney as a boy, moved to Phoenix in the early 1930s, then returned in the early 1950s to work as a building contractor on Country Club Heights projects. He was survived by his wife and four children.
Homer Light, 71, of Potter, was hospitalized in Sidney Tuesday after a pickup ran off the road, through a borrow pit and fence, ejecting him. Trooper Del Shipley of the Nebraska Safety Patrol investigated the 4:45 p.m. crash. his injuries were reported not serious.
The 11th annual RCA approved Potter Rodeo set for June 6 with 146 entrants last year and possibly more this year. Debuting acts include Corine Williams the lady bronc rider and bull dogger and Mike Cervi the rodeo clown. Events cover calf roping bulldogging bull riding bareback saddle bronc and the jackpot girls barrel race. Climax is a dance at Potter Legion Hall Saturday night with added seating and Boy Scout refreshment stands. Dick Stull leads the board with Larson and others.
Cheyenne County Attorney John Peetz Jr. charged LeRoy Apadeca 19 and Reuben Gonzales 15 with second degree arson in the Christmas night District 97 school fire near Colton. They join Fred Gonzales 17 and Jim Trujillo 21 who faced three Saturday night arson counts, with bonds set and district court bound over. Trujillo has prior corrections history. arraignment before District Judge John Kuns will appoint counsel.
The Nebraska ASC state committee allows drought affected small grains to be cut for hay and counted as eligible conservation use under Wheat and Feed Grain Programs for 1964. Applies to all Nebraska counties. Final cut date for wheat and barley is June 20 in Cheyenne County. Other small grains must be cut by July 1 to qualify.
City offices and Cheyenne County courthouse will close Friday for Memorial Day weekend. Federal offices also close. Post office closes Saturday with no deliveries. Lobby hours 6 a.m. to 6 30 p.m. Banks and most businesses observe full Saturday closure.
Rainfall measured between 0.10 and 0.15 inch drenched fields Tuesday night into Wednesday morning across the county but fell short of need. Cheyenne County agents report soil moisture only about one tenth of required. wheat shows signs of stress and could benefit from more rain. Eastern areas missed some rain. totals varied by location. Skies remained overcast with cool temps and ongoing drizzle into mid-morning. farmers hope additional rainfall arrives to support crops into June.
Mostly cloudy conditions continue through tomorrow with a chance of scattered showers and a few thunderstorms. Lows tonight will be in the 40s and highs tomorrow around the 60s.
