Memorial Poppy and Its Meaning in World War I Remembrance
The memorial poppy replicates the battlefield flowers from France and Belgium. Chosen as a symbol because it grew where soldiers fell, it honors the dead and serves the living. Disabled veterans in hospitals make the poppies under the American Legion Auxiliary, paid one cent per poppy and a quarter cent for attaching a label. Volunteers, mainly women, sell the poppies to fund veteran welfare and families of the dead, with the badge and Legion Auxiliary label signaling the cause. Wearing the poppy honors the dead and aids living veterans.
