Heavy rain drenched Cheyenne county renewing crop outlook after a damaging freeze that affected about 70 percent of winter wheat. Moisture is expected to aid recovery, with spring plowing halted by crusted soil and potential yield improvement across the panhandle growers. Continued on page 8.
A moving picture on farm management focusing on swine production will be shown at the vocational agriculture building in Sidney on Thursday evening June 4 at eight. J. W. Nielsen, a vocational agriculture instructor, leads the program as part of evening school classes for county farmers. The event is free and invites all farmers, with special invitations for those in Sidney high school evening schools. 4-H pig club members are targeted and cooperation with Cheyenne County Lumber Co plans more similar films this summer.
The Sidney Seals, leaders of Cheyenne county baseball, arrange two non league games this weekend at Sidney park. Saturday they face Sterling Merchants with Hopkins the rookie pitching sensation expected to start. Beismeir and Hornsby are set for mound roles, and Sunday Kimball club will visit for another contest.
Omaha boosters visited Sidney on a friendship making trip sponsored by the Omaha chamber of commerce. Nearly 100 Omaha businessmen arrived by spring train, parading with the Desdunes band and distributing souvenirs. A welcome program featured R P Kepler Glen B Fastburn and local talent, with Grabils Merrymakers providing music at the booster ball.
Daily Vacation Bible School resumes Monday June 1 at Central School for three weeks with sessions Monday to Sunday 9 to 4 30. Programs led by Mrs M E Pettibone Mrs Irvin Brooks Miss Muriel Riggs and Mrs Harold Huntsinger. New course non sectarian. Open to any five year olds regardless of creed. Budget slightly over 100 dollars funded by a one dollar per family donation if possible. Churches cooperating include Christian Christ Episcopal Trinity Lutheran Lemon Memorial Methods and Light Memorial Presbyterian.
Memorial Day program scheduled for Saturday May 30 at 10 30 am at City Auditorium Sidney. Invocation by Rev Il Joens of Dalton chaplain American Legion Post No 17. Report Service Officer A H Dilley of Graves to be decorated.
Coach Leo P. Black told Sidney Lions members about next year’s athletic program. A new high school with spacious grounds enables creation of an athletic field and cinder path. Black and Nebraska’s Henry Schulte toured the grounds saying it could yield one of the state’s best 440 yard tracks.

The Fox theatre ventilating system was repaired this week to assure comfort during summer. Fifteen thousand feet of fresh outside air are pumped through the theatre every minute by the improved device. Manager A J Hermton says it is the first time since installation that the system has functioned correctly.
Nebraska hog raisers should note how production affects price. A $6.56 to $11.35 per cwt swing in a year shows overproduction depresses market value. During 1923 24, U S hog slaughter reached 11.9 billion pounds with $6.56 average price in Nebraska. For 1925 26, slaughter totaled 9.7 billion pounds with $11.35 Nebraska price as output rose.
Music pupils of Miss Helen Peetz presented a Tuesday night recital titled In My Grandmother's Garden at the city auditorium. The event featured piano numbers and recitations in a radio broadcast style with stage flowers and cottage backdrops. Franklin Dedrick won a gold pin for top year average, with rewards given to other pupils for outstanding work.
Night Marshal Kentfield chased a car thief for about forty miles, catching Mack McNeff after the vehicle was seen passing through Sidney and into Kimball. He forced the car to the curb and arrested the suspect after a long pursuit.
The Telegraph-News will begin a weekly farm news series next Tuesday written by Prof. J W Nielsen, head of the Smith Hughes school. He will travel countywide on daily trips with first hand crop and livestock outlooks and farm projects, continuing through most of the summer as an authoritative source for readers.
An Omaha booster describes a marked shift in mood upon entering western Nebraska towns during a rail tour. He notes Ogallala’s atmosphere changes, Sidney stands as the tour’s bright spot, Western hospitality exceeds expectation, and praises a paving program that could make Sidney the best town of its size in Nebraska.
The outdoor miniature golf course at 15th Avenue and Illinois Street in Sidney opened for the summer this week. It is the city’s only outdoor miniature course and is expected to attract many players in warm weather. Fairways have been resanded and smoothed, new hazards added, and the course refreshed with new paint. Rates are 15 cents per player.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 for Mrs A K Greenlee a Sidney pioneer who died Monday. Christ Episcopal church hosted Bishop George Allen Beecher of Hastings officiating. Viewings allowed at home. casket not opened. Sidney stores closed 2 to 3 p m as tribute. Pallbearers were longtime friends Herman Schroeder Charles Wright John Jurgens John McIntosh I E Grabil and Nels Olson. Funeral and burial to be brief. Many western Nebraska pioneers expected to attend.
The spring survey by state and federal agricultural statistics shows corn belt land values suffered the steepest decline of any group. Nebraska remains about six percent above prewar levels with an average value of $52.40 per acre, down from 13 percent above prewar. Eastern corn belt is 13 percent below prewar, western corn belt 3 percent below, while national averages sit six percent above prewar.
Six Cheyenne county youth head to Lincoln for the 4-H club week at the agricultural college. Participants include Bertha Omel, Walter Miller, Floyd Miller, Maurice King, Gladys Franklin, and Helen Kastens, all county champions in pig, dairy calf, news writing, corn, leadership, and canning. Guests are funded by Omaha Union Stockyards, Nebraska Farmer, The Telegraph, Burlington railroad, Ball.
The six block paving district should move ahead without delay as remonstrances filed last week showed no organized opposition. Bids for sanitary and storm sewer construction will be opened by the city council on June 5, after which paving progress is expected. Experts note wartime price lows make Sidney's paving cheaper than years ago.
