Education in Spotlight as Nebraska Ties Polio and Spending
In Lincoln the State Education Department reviews student protection against polio and post high school plans. A polio shot survey shows 63 percent of high school students fully protected, 79 percent started shots, 21 percent unprotected. An elementary survey finds 77 percent complete three shots. 11 percent unprotected. A study of 450 high schools reports 44 percent of graduates enroll in higher education, with 28 percent in college or university courses and 77 percent of Nebraska-bound students in colleges or universities outside the state. The State Board may raise teacher standards for accreditation. Governor Anderson signals further hard-budget planning to control expansion while state spending totals 100.3 million since July, with 67.4 million in the treasury. Political analysis notes Republicans hold stronger statewide sway than in 1956, as Democrats plan reorganization for fall elections. Local 4-H clubs report meetings in Gurley and Clover Clover Cutters with livestock disease quizzes and refreshments.
