Sidney stores run an annual Employee Days sale Thursday through Saturday with bosses in the back, employees at the front, and big savings on all merchandise. Many stores stay open Friday night for shoppers.
Defense officials indicate Sioux Army Depot can host private industry within limits before declares phase out. Officials cited earlier use cases, retraining programs, and cooperative planning with Nebraska leaders and state agencies to spur private enterprise and potential job growth as the depot winds down by mid 1967.
The Air Force fired its 45th Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missile from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Monday, marking another test of the West Coast ICBM program.
Western Nebraska reports three new oil developments with two Banner County wells and one Kimball County well. Tiger Oil Co. found a Kimball discovery at No. 4 Lukassen in an unnamed field and a Banner County No. 3 Mary Lewis in Llano Field. Cambridge Oil Co. and Hawkeye Exploration drill No. 1 Peterson in Banner County Casino Field with 16 feet of show in the J sand. Other permits and ventures span Cheyenne Morrill and Red Willow counties with multiple operators and prospects across the Denver-Julesburg Basin.
In a Tuesday meeting the Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce approved a 1964 65 budget of roughly 5000. Funds will back Fort Sidney Queen pageant bosses night farmers night Soap Box Derby Junior Wrestling Junior Tennis Junior Golf and Little League baseball among other activities. Bill Maddox named Jaycee of the Month for Fort Sidney Queen pageant work. John Hossack state engineer heard thanks for Interstate 80 priority change request. Bowling gear won by Spec Innes to finance Junior Wrestling Lincoln trip. President Ned Swaeby led a 28 member group with two guests.
Local motorists faced hazards in the late afternoon hours as police logged five minor accidents over five days. Notable incidents include Gwendolyn Norton, 49, striking Joel Fraggs, 19, at 6:10 p.m. Saturday causing $75 damage, and W. E. Gehrig backing from an A and W Root Beer lot causing $19 damage to Lois Rice. Monday afternoon saw four vehicles, a semi, and a bicycle collide, with $334 total damages and one bike injury. Eleanor Deaver’s car and Eugene England’s truck were involved at 4:34 p.m. at Illinois Street. Allen Oskvarek, 7, escaped injury when his bicycle was hit at 5:34 p.m. near 18th and Cedar, with $5 damage to Leroy Virgil’s car. At 5:45 p.m. at 18th and Newton, Dale Epperson stopped at a stop sign, then was hit by John James. damages totaled $284. Epperson was later fined $10 and costs for failure to yield.
An organization meeting of reunion committees for Lodgepole Old Settlers is set for 8 p.m. Thursday in the bank building. Paul Huff, chairman of this year's Labor Day events, urges all committee members and interested residents to attend. The Lodgepole High School Alumni reunion is planned to run with the 1964 Old Settlers event.
Phil Lip George, 26, Merino Route 1, was driving a Tex Engineering owned 195% Ford oil field steamer truck northbound on Highway 19 one mile south of Lorenzo when the left front tire blew out at 6 45 a m. The truck crossed the road into a borrow pit and sand bank, stopping three feet from Burlington Railroad tracks. The windshield popped out and doors jammed but George escaped unharmed crawling out through the windshield. A 1000 gallon water diesel tank behind the cab was bent forward, partially crushing the cab.
Weather continues fair and hot with a few late afternoon and evening thundershowers. Highs near 90 while tonight’s low settles in the 50s.
The American Legion Auxiliary launches Poppy Day on May 23 with veterans making the crepe paper poppies. Mrs. John Elwell says 20 million Americans will wear them to honor fallen and aid living veterans, aided by 150,000 volunteers distributing at streets and shopping centers nationwide.
Cheyenne County Commissioners met with Sidney Public Library representatives to discuss the Bookmobile program amid a two year trial. No decision on continuation was made. the final ruling is due around April or May next year when the trial ends.
The fifth annual Potter Rodeo will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 6 and 7. RCA approved features include calf roping bulldogging bull riding bareback riding saddle bronc riding barrel races and more. Rodeo clown Mike Cervi and announcer Tommy Jones will appear. Corine Williams will perform as a horse rider and bulldogger. Increased seating aims to accommodate growing attendance as top cowboys enter. A $500 purse is offered.
