A Saturday blaze on West Second Street started in the carpenter shop at the Pantenburg building. No wind aided the fire and volunteer firefighters kept it under control with little damage. The lower floor housed the shop while the upper floor served as lodging for the Dewey Restaurant. Furniture was moved to the street. the owner, Mrs. Pantenburg, had no insurance. The incident renews talk of forming a local fire department.
Mrs. Dora Kruse aged mother of E. Kruse sr. died at her son’s home north of Sidney Nebraska May 18 1900 after an illness of eight weeks following pneumonia. She was born in Mecklenburg Schwerin Germany July 17 1814 and came to Nebraska in 1888. She leaves a son Wm Kruse of Elliott Iowa. Funeral services were held Tuesday in charge of Rev. Foster.
The Union Pacific announces summer travel by rail to the Rocky Mountain region. One round trip fare from Missouri River to Denver Colorado Springs Pueblo Ogden and Salt Lake City with return by October 31 1900. Timetables and fall details available from E R Breisch Agent.
Country correspondence notes a sunny spell as John Taylor visited Irving last Friday. Asa Remsburg and Chas Toole cleaned Russian thistles from the ditch. Pat Rowland moved cattle to summer range. Grass grows fast and cattle improve. Oliver hunted horses with Frank Irving. Mrs Tolle and Miss Dixon called on Mr and Mrs C A Tolle. Albert Dixon couple prepare to relocate to Colorado.
Fine weather and thriving business mark the town with strong wheat and stock. rail work continues south of town and canal cleanup proceeds. A near bridge washout prompts night shift rail care while a child’s river fall leads to a safe rescue.
At the Chicago general conference of the M E church a vast auditorium hosts delegates totaling 725 to 750 as discussions center on The Religion of the Future and a Christianity more Christlike. Leaders seek a simpler creed, practical pulpit, broader social action, global missions, and renewed gospel power. Rev. Bakes visited Lodgepole Saturday to conduct services at Louis Banta's graveside.
Robert McMullan known as the Stabbed Tramp expired Monday after a knife wound inflicted during a Thursday fight near the stockyards. Coroner Bassett empanelled a jury. key witness Frank Winkleman described the melee with a coupling pin and knife. The dead man, six feet one inch, 176 pounds, dark features, bore the alias Long Slim and Price or Pearce. burial planned in Clinton, Massachusetts, under Father Flood. The killer remains at large.
An ad promising a cure all for a day with L B Q tablets warns of a refund if it fails. The genuine product bears L. B. Q. on each tablet. Two grafters posing as advertising solicitors tried to bank on local businessmen with an alleged Sidney guide, then fled after taking money for drinks.
Officers raided the hobo fraternity last Saturday and arrested a dozen or eighty. Most were sentenced to fifteen days hard labor as authorities push severe measures to rid the community of the nuisance and burden to residents.
O H Tracy of Grand Island, superintendent of agencies for the Security Toutine Investment Co., is in the city and likely to establish a local agency here.
County Judge issued marriage licenses to Wm. Krueger and Maggie Kurth Sidney Jas. K. Childers and May Cawley Sidney.

Sidney schools closed for summer vacation with no graduating class this year. Eighth Grade and High School exercises at the Court House to be reported next week. Lower room programs held Tuesday and Thursday in front of many patrons. parents expressed pride in teachers and pupils. Attendance was high and overflow crowded the building, signaling a larger next year.
Track laying began south out of Bridgeport Monday. A new switch engine 995 started in the yards this week. Operator Skinner of Grand Island began day telegraph duties last Saturday. Will Grosvenor now works in the round house. Will Davis and Johnny Barnhart left Friday for a North River trip. Gen Manager Dickinson's special went through neat Thursday. Two new crews were added to the fourth district to handle extra gravel trains. The pay car visited Thursday disbursing UW P. boys checks.
Paul and Lewellen Martin have perfect attendance. Ruby Lyon won top honors in the Fifth grade spelling class, Edna Johnson and Francis Brennan led the Fourth grade. Rooms 2 3 4 and 6 delivered a successful Tuesday program, and Room 1 entertained visitors Thursday morning. Examinations showed learning progress as the year ends with a hoped 40 attendees at Friday’s recital.
