Miss Deanne Peterson will host an 8th grade Dutch exchange pupil, Miss Nelline Van Ile, in Wayne. Peterson will then depart for New York in late July with other foreign exchange students for orientation before heading to Utrecht, Holland, about 22 miles from Amsterdam, for a year abroad.
Hemingford Chamber of Commerce plans to file articles of incorporation cited by the board of directors. The group aims for better operation and legal representation in ongoing projects with donations received from clubs and an individual toward a band program. President Allison Johnson noted a $400 shortfall in the budget, requiring use of funds from the annual Christmas Rama appropriation.
Chappell led a fund drive to buy heating equipment for the swimming pool. Beta Sigma Phi Sorority presented $1052.80 to the city council, with total contributions from business houses, children, Lions Club, Rotary, and the Chappell Chamber of Commerce.
Local elevator sources quote the wheat price today at $1.67 per bushel. The report records a single price datum for the grain market.
William Selak of Scottsbluff was named District II commander at the annual VFW meeting in Sidney with about 75 members present. The district includes Kimball, Scottsbluff, Morrill and Cheyenne Counties. Other officers elected were James Paxton, Sidney, senior vice commander. Joe Hajek, Sidney, junior vice. Harold Wathews, Sidney, quartermaster. Tom Lenzen, Sidney, adjutant. Winton Wallin, Kimball, officer of the day. Elmer Rasmussen, Potter, chaplain. outgoing president Lawrence Engstrom presided. A. C. Adcock of Scottsbluff was installed as department senior vice commander and recommended for Department Commander at Hastings in June. A second resolution urged Lenzen to pursue the department junior vice commander post.
Don Rapp manager of the Cheyenne County ASC office was named president of Nebraska Association of County ASC Employees as the state joins a national movement. The self financed group aims to improve benefits, seek equal Civil Service style perks, and promote professional advancement while avoiding pressure tactics. dues are $6 per county manager and $2 for others, with a national meeting in Memphis May 22.
Emil and Blanche Kleich will sell a large house in Gurley at 2 pm Tuesday. The property includes eight additional rental bedrooms and is offered on the premises.
County Attorney F L Balderson said no charges have been filed yet in the party at a Sidney motel on the evening of May 8. He noted that his office and the Sheriff's office planned to confer today on the matter.
The Sidney Jaycees announced the Teen-Age Safe Driving Road-e-o at the high school weekend events. Teenagers 16 to 19 may compete Sunday for a first prize plaque and a trip to the state contest with a $2,000 national scholarship possible. a free dance is held Friday at Fort Sidney Motor Hotel as a prelude with details from Jerry Carr.
Loyde Adams announces the VFW Post 610 and Auxiliary will run the annual Buddy Poppy sale in Sidney on Saturday May 23. Seort Ostermeier Wilbur Wiedman and Mrs. E H Mitchell Mrs Gene Schlotfeld lead this campaign. Proceeds aid veterans and the National VFW Children's Home in Eaton Rapids Michigan as well as local relief funds.
An Army recruiter will be at the Sidney Post Office on Wednesday from 9 30 a m to 12 noon to meet local residents and answer questions about enlistment and careers.
More than 4,000 people attended the Armed Forces Day Open House at Sioux Ordnance Depot, nearly double last year’s 1,674. Weather was favorable, with minor sprinkles and near perfect temperatures. New features aided the turnout, including two helicopters, Nike Ajax and Corporal missiles, and visitors were allowed to bring cameras. About 1,400 kids rode a two-car train, 1,500 took one-hour bus tours, and guardsmen demonstrated weapons. Visitors came mainly from Western Nebraska, Wyoming, and Colorado.
Three Sidney postal clerks attended the Nebraska Federation of Post Office Clerks convention at Broken Bow last weekend and secured approval to host the 1960 convention in Sidney. Delegates La Vern Couch Harold Kieselhorst and Pat Dalton represented Sidney while Don Urwiller of Hastings was elected president and Mrs Urwiller led the auxiliary.
A 20-year-old Chappell man Dwaine F. Radke was hospitalized with head lacerations after a near head-on collision one mile east of Sidney on U S Highway 30. Radke pulled from a parking lot onto the highway headings west, colliding with eastbound pickup driven by James S. Taylor of Sidney. Taylor was uninjured. Radke was released several hours later. Passenger Burton Gunnn escaped injury. Damages were estimated at 350 dollars for Radke's car and 175 dollars for Taylor's pickup.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce reports a total membership of 219, with 192 business and professional members and 27 employee memberships. Fifty-six potential members have shown intent to join, pending dues. Manager Wayne Moran noted 29 paid memberships have generated $10,729.75 in revenue, against a 1959 budget of $16,000.
The Cheyenne Deuel County Sheep Breeders Association will meet at Dale Talic place in Lodgeport on Sunday May 21 at 8 p m. Members and guests are to attend for discussion of breeding plans and upcoming shows.
