School Land Lease Hikes Are Upheld in Court
Seven Banner and Kimball county residents lost a district court bid to block higher rentals on school lands they lease. Judge John Polk upheld a May 10 1948 order by the board of educational lands and funds approving a higher value schedule for school lands in Banner and Kimball counties. Plaintiffs argued the order was in error and sought reversal. Light Crash Damages Reported By Police
An estimated 50 dollars in damage occurred to a 1946 Chevrolet four door driven by Joseph Marino of Chicago Illinois when it collided with a 1946 Plymouth club coupe driven by Reynold P Spence of Sidney at 1230 PM Saturday. Police said Marino slowed for Highway 19 junction and Spence attempted to pass as Marino resumed moving on Highway 30. Damages centered on the Chevrolet left front fender. The crash at the 12th and Illinois streets intersection also involved two other cars. A 1947 Ford driven by Jesse R Allen of Denver stopped to let a car turn left and a 1939 Chevrolet driven by David L Brauer of Sidney struck the Ford. Damages were not yet estimated.

Pioneer Settler in Panhandle Dies at 75 in Bridgeport
Thomas Ishmel 75 a western Nebraska pioneer who spent 63 years in the North Platte valley died Saturday at his Bridgeport home. Born June 25 1873 in Mount Auburn North Carolina he came to Bridgeport in 1886. He married E Josephine Zimmerman August 10 1899 and opened a general store in 1901. He built one of Bridgeport's first business buildings and served Morrill county treasurer for five years. He later moved to Bayard 1918 where he ran a motion picture theatre until 1927 before returning to Bridgeport to work for Bridgeport Lumber Co. He was an Odd Fellows member for over 40 years with hunting and fishing as lifelong hobbies.
