Graduates Honored as 159 Eighth Grade Pupils Attend

Graduation exercises celebrated 159 eighth grade pupils from Cheyenne county schools at Tobin opera house on May 14. Center rural orchestra performed under Mrs. J O Lobb, with Rev Samuel Light giving invocation and Newton W Gaines addressing the assembly. County Attorney R P Kepler presented diplomas as the Sidney glee club sang. District listings name numerous graduates by district and pupil.

Sidney Schools Rank High in State Tests

Sidney public school pupils excel in five standard tests covering penmanship reading arithmetic spelling and composition. The results from third to eighth grades show Sidney above state averages, with penmanship speed high though quality slightly below. Sidney Prepares for Largest Union Pacific Conclave

Plans are nearly set for the biggest gathering of Union Pacific railroad employees and officials in Sidney on Wednesday May 21. About 400 from North Platte Cheyenne and Taramie will attend including Safety First members. a noon luncheon with the Sidney chamber, an afternoon baseball game and a city tour by car for those not watching the game.

Second Phone Circuit For Sidney Completed

The Northwestern Bell Telephone company reports two new two wire circuits between Sidney and Grand Island and another between Lexington and Grand Island, boosting long distance capacity at about 25 000 dollars. Since 1921 the Sidney Grand Island line has grown from 24 to about 40 calls daily, aided by repeaters at Crawford North Platte and Grand Island to improve clarity for Nebraska and Black Hills connections. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Henrys Johnson on May 9.

Memorial Day To Be Biggest Ever In Sidney

Memorial Day plans in Sidney aim for the largest observance yet. The Cheyenne county war memorial will be dedicated with a parade of ex servicemen, school children, and civic groups, followed by cemetery services and an indoor U S A service. The Auxiliary will serve dinner to ex service men. committees led by Gardner Ledbetter and B W Bonham oversee outdoor and indoor programs, speaker arrangements, dedications, and grave decorations.

Frank Tobin traveled to Chugwater Wyoming for the funeral of Mrs Ference Hulett the postmasters wife sister of his cousin wife. Mrs Hulett was killed in the lobby of the Chugwater post office Monday by telegrapher William Hammond who then shot himself. Inquest testimony said Hammond wanted to marry Hulett who rejected him.

Sidney Music Week Draws Crowd Across Western Nebraska

Sidney hosts its first annual Music Week with large crowds every evening and outdoor afternoon programs moved indoors due to winds. Local groups from nine to sixteen years old performed, with 200 musicians sharing stage on the court house lawn for a major community concert attended by about 2,000.
