The Telegraph marks a special issue on soil conservation highlighting western farming history and the shift from depletion to protection. It recalls pioneer efforts, the 1930s drought lessons, and ongoing partnerships to preserve soil for productive dryland and irrigated farms.
H N Rhodes, director of the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission for seven years, resigns to join Utility Data Corp as chief engineer. He plans to move to Kansas City around June 10 and will work on international aerial surveying. Rhodes credits the commission with strong conservation rules and waterflood recovery progress. The panel will seek a successor at its Sidney meeting.
Sidney native Neal T. Craig was chosen as Grand Commander of the Nebraska Military Order of the Cooties VFW at the state convention in Ogallala. He succeeds Herman Karlin of Fremont and also serves as Sidney post commander and district leader. Odessa auxiliary head Minnie Furst of Omaha named. Other new officers and attendees from Sidney listed.
Louis Hessler of the National Farmers Organization will present a charter to the Cheyenne County NFO at 8 30 p.m. Thursday May 18 at the Elks Club in Sidney. All members and wives are invited. Officers and directors of the grain meat and milk boards will be elected and installed with an explanation of NFO and new member acceptance from 7 30 p.m. until charter time.
Hog prices at the Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion rose $4.50 in two weeks. A top of 22.50 was hit for 203 lb hogs, with 200-240 lb hogs at 21.80 to 22.40 and 240-300 lb hogs 20.60 to 21.60. Heavier hogs, sows, feeders, and steer calves showed varied but firm values, cow and calf pairs sold high, and the sale was described as very satisfactory by a pavilion spokesman. The next sale is set for Saturday May 20.
The Grand Lodge A F and A M of Nebraska hosts a cornerstone laying at the new Cheyenne County courthouse this Friday at 2 PM and a 6:30 PM dinner at Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. Attendees include Grand Lodge officers, their wives, and Master Masons with tickets from local lodges and banks. Reservations due by Tuesday night.
In Sterling Colorado crews from Schultz Lindsey preparing to lay two miles of concrete pavement in two lanes on an 24 mile stretch of Interstate 80S from Crook to Sterling. Project superintendent Al Ikel says current pace is 1.4 miles per day and the team hopes to beat records with a CMI slip-paver. The eight inch thick pavement will be 24 feet wide.
The Nebraska Department of Roads will resurface eight miles of North Gurley Road north of Gurley this summer. Bids open June 8 with work starting soon after letting. Armor coat of asphaltic oil and incidental tasks will be done. the road is rutting and needs improvements. Estimated 24,800 gallons of oil and over 1,000 yards of aggregate required.
Public hearing before the Nebraska State Railway Commission at 9 30 a m Tuesday May 23 at Broadwater Fire Hall to decide on discontinuing the Union Pacific Railroad station. Citizens may appear and testify about the application.
Memorial Hospital therapist Daryl Conger was named vice president of the Nebraska Chapter of the American Physical Therapists Association at Grand Island. Mike Russell also attended as fellow therapist. new officers include Patricia Bott president Fred Brown secretary and John Bennett treasurer. The group pushed for a Nebraska School of Physical Therapy in cooperation with the University of Nebraska College of Medicine.
A wet weekend eased area moisture woes and improved prospects for wheat and other crops while delaying official appraisal of winter wheat damage. Farmers report generous precipitation since April, with 1.39 inches Friday night and 0.31 inches Saturday at Gurley, and other totals across the county as conditions improve for beets pastures and spring field work.
The Western Nebraska United Chambers of Commerce board in Chadron voted to oppose changing the state auto license slogan from The Beef State. They also plan a June 14 Alliance committee visit to oppose Burlington’s train 42 and 43 removal between Alliance and Billings Montana. J D Borman from Gordon spoke on beef imports, with delegations from Chadron Alliance Gordon Hemingford Crawford Valentine Hyannis Rushville Hay Springs and Arnold attending the dinner meeting.
Nebraska reports only five percent of winter wheat abandoned since fall due to wind erosion and late seeding. Harvest expected from 3,466,000 acres on 3,622,000 planted, possibly the largest since 1953. USDA pegged 1967 production at 96,448,000 bushels, 28 bushels per acre. Pasture conditions remain below normal at 72 percent from May 1 survey.
Duane Johnson, Sidney High School music leader for three years, resigns to lead Hastings College bands. Superintendent Russell Pedersen confirmed the resignation this morning, with Johnson finishing the current school year in Sidney and likely starting in Hastings in September. Johnson previously came from Broken Bow.

Cheyenne County Attorney John Peetz urged Sidney retailers to involve law enforcement when dealing with suspected shoplifters. He advised against handling suspects personally and said publicity for juvenile offenders may be used at the judge’s discretion. Merchants were urged to cooperate with authorities and avoid taking matters into their own hands.
The Sterling to Crook segment of I-80S will be complete and in service by late summer or early fall. Progress on the 23.8 mile stretch is on schedule with paving underway from Crook west to the link with I-80S8 at Sterling. Colorado Highway 14 between Sterling and Ft. Collins also on summer schedule with widening and resurfacing completed beyond Briggsdale.
