Sidney High School announces its honor students for the 1967 graduating class. Tom Edwards is valedictorian, Pamela Geu salutatorian, and Linda Abrams class orator. Baccalaureate is set for Sunday May 21 and graduation for May 24.
Sidney High School will graduate 112 seniors with 8 p.m. baccalaureate on Sunday and commencement on Wednesday in the junior high auditorium. Valedictorian Tom Edwards salutatorian Pam Gell class orator Linda Abrams lead the class with Rev. Greene delivering the sermon and Rev. Monnich giving invocations.
Russell Pedersen outlined that Sidney schools have received 1.76 million dollars in Federal aid over the past year with no accompanying federal mandates. He cited Title 874 funds for federally impacted areas and a 50-50 match for various subjects, plus full Federal financing for the elementary secondary summer program. The talk also noted aid used for materials, lunches, and the new high school addition while unions and curriculum faced ongoing scrutiny.
Bridgeport marks Camp Clarke Day on Saturday May 20 with a 10 a m parade. The event recalls Camp Clarke Bridge opened May 1876 and a wagon era post along the Sidney Deadwood Gold Trail. Activities include a whisker contest antique cars pioneer registration a bank robbery reenactment fiddlers quick draw games horse shoe tourney barbecue at City Park East and Camp Clarke Varieties at the high school with multiple dances to follow.
The Nebraska Tax Commission says retailers must prove installment contracts before June 1 are tax exempt while no routine audits will check compliance. If 25 percent down and delivery before Sept 1, time sales avoid the 2.5 percent tax. otherwise, most pre June 1 contracts face taxation. An aide notes the state will tax all credit transactions unless exemptions are shown.
Firemen from the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department tackled a Tuesday morning blaze in the parking area behind Doctors O Halloran and Dorwart’s offices. The fire caused about 800 dollars in damage to Leroy Hadden’s car. Fire Chief Harvey Vizina said the cause isn’t pinpointed but the fire began under the dashboard. One of the Hadden children was briefly alone in the vehicle.
Lincoln reports weekly temperatures ran 4 to 9 degrees below normal slowing growth of wheat, alfalfa, and pasture feed. Corn, sorghum, and soybeans planting limited by frost. 35 percent of corn in, 56 percent by last year, with moisture needed for uniform emergence. The Masonic Day ceremony marks the cornerstone laying for the Cheyenne County courthouse in Sidney on Friday May 19 at 2 p.m. Grand Lodge of Nebraska A F and A M officers led by Grand Master Lewis R Ricketts will oversee the event with a noon lunch and 1 p.m. reception. The public is invited and tickets are available from local lodge officers Greenlees' and the American National Bank.
Lincoln AP State Tax Commissioner Murrell B McNeil warned up to 15000 Nebraska retailers may have not applied for a license to collect the 2.5 percent tax. Retailers must be licensed to operate after June 1 when the new levy takes effect.
