Preliminary 1970 census figures show Cheyenne County down 4,300 residents from 1960, with Sidney likely between 6,000 and 6,500. Loss tied to Sioux Army Depot personnel exodus and declining farm population. Final counts due by year end. possible impacts on school funding and state aid.
Nebraska extension entomologists Lloyd Andersen and David Keith report May surveys found low cutworm numbers in Panhandle wheat. Cold and wet weather kept large pale western populations from developing, with light damage overall and vigorous growth continuing. Fields with 1-2 worms per linear foot should be watched, but most can withstand conditions if soil remains moist.
Partly cloudy this afternoon tonight and Thursday with a few afternoon and evening thundershowers. Highs in the 60s Thursday, Lows around 40. Rain chances about 10 percent each period. Extended outlook Friday through Sunday partly cloudy and warmer with highs 65 to 75 and lows around 35.

Dr George P Taylor of Sidney is re elected president of the American Association of Osteopathic Examiners. He is the first osteopath named to Nebraska State Board of Examiners in Medicine and Surgery and serves as past president of the Nebraska Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons.
The Golden Circle parking meter plan was dropped at a regular meeting after members concluded advantages did not outweigh disadvantages. No action was taken on out of town salesman proposals. Supporters urged thorough research and cross town contact before city council consideration. End of month sale promotion set for May 26 with Cheyenne County Centennial tie in left to individual merchants. June meeting moved from June 9 to June 2 due to schedule conflicts.
Mel Steen retired director of The Nebraska Fish and Game Commission will speak at the Chappell airport dedication Sunday May 17 with a 10 am program and 8 30 am fly in breakfast Paul Burker Director of Nebraska Aeronautics co headlines with Steen contests refreshments and prizes airplane rides offered at a penny a pound
In Cheyenne County 50 percent turnout produced notable upsets with Sidney city council and district 1 school board seats decided by contests involving incumbents and challengers. Hessle led council votes, Haupt and Gottschalk followed. Cook and Mrs Young won school board seats while several county offices went unopposed or featured tight margins.
James Lodes, agent for Lincoln National Life, is named district development supervisor for a territory from Wyoming to North Platte and becomes general agent for Nebraska and part of Colorado with Interstate Assurance Co. A new Lincoln National headquarters opens in Sidney at 935 8th Avenue, with Lodes in charge of hiring training and supervising agents and agencies for the expanded area.
