Cheyenne County Hospital Plans Clear Final Hurdle

The Cheyenne County Hospital plan by Architect Frank McNett has cleared state health service review and moves to federal evaluation in Kansas City. The T shaped design allows future expansion, with bids expected after imminent action on schematics. Local land donated by the Dorwarts abuts Valley View area. Nebraska to receive roughly 497,634 federal dollars for community hospital construction in the new fiscal year. Sidney project will consume over half of the 1954 allocation.

Legislature nears adjournment amid tax bill and truck rules

On the 88th day of the session senators push toward June 4 adjournment as work intensifies. Key issues include a five percent tolerance for overweight trucks, higher motor vehicle license fees, diesel tax parity, and LB 185 altering vehicle tax to a token $1 now and monthly payments instead of a year late credit system. If enacted the shift would prevent double taxation and require taxes before license issuance.

Raw Garbage Ban To Be Pressed In State

Nebraska officials announce a crackdown on feeding raw garbage to hogs. State veterinarian Dr J L George says the law, in effect since December, carries a 100 dollar fine plus costs and an extra 100 dollars for each day of continued feeding.

Sidney plans a two day Blood for Freedom train visit urging 200 pints. Only 60 donors signed up at Hardy-Clark Furniture, not enough for one day. Eighth Grade Graduation Exercises Next Friday at Sidney

Eighth graders of Cheyenne County will receive diplomas Friday afternoon in a traditional program presented by the students. County Superintendent Edith Oldershaw announced readiness for the annual commencement at 2:00 PM in the Sidney City Auditorium. The program features the Dalton School Band, vocal numbers, skits, recitations, and instrument solos, with diploma presentations by local officials.

Accidents over Mother's Day weekend report no injuries

Across multiple incidents over the Mother's Day weekend, no injuries were reported though property damage was substantial. A bus car collision near Sidney caused 285 dollars in damage, with 35 on the bus and 250 on the Studebaker. Other crashes in Lodgepole Sunol and on Highway 30 resulted in 125 and 75 dollar damages, and a 400 dollar car loss in the Sunol sideswipe. The Nebraska Highway Safety Patrol investigated all events.

Potter Store Looted By Robbers Friday

Between six and seven hundred dollars worth of merchandise was taken from Deans Hardware at Otter during the night Friday. Deputy Sheriff Bart Taylor said two men were involved, based on footprints outside the door and window. They forced a rear door panel, entered, then exited afterfinding another door and broke a window in the office.

Sick Wheat Under Study In Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County Agent Ivan Liljegren reports growing interest in sick wheat with studies on 15 farmers and 20 fields hailed last fall. Fields will be rechecked this spring and next year as Dr Bosalis of the University of Nebraska leads broader investigations into the retarded crop performance after hail events.

Potter School Bids Let for New Consolidated Building

Potter Board of Education awarded the general contract to Carl Christ & Son of Sidney for 221,981, the plumbing and heating to Scottsbluff Plumbing and Heating Co. for 69,200, and Erwin Electric Company of Kimball for 17,130. Total contracts total 323,726. Construction to start soon and the building to be ready for occupancy in fall 1954.

Deadline May 20 To Certify Seed

The seed certification deadline is May 20 according to Cheyenne County Agent Ivan Liljegren. Applications for wheat and other small grains must be filed at the county agent's office and carry the certification tag and lot number from the seed planted.

Oil Fields To Be Toured By 100 Boosters

One hundred Omaha Boosters will tour Sidney on a six day Good Will Special Train trip starting May 10. They will visit 68 communities totalling 169 041 population, distribute 85 000 balloons and 250 000 pieces of candy, parade through towns, and be led by Dan Desdune's 22 piece band. Stops include Grand Island North Platte Broken Bow Laramie and three Kansas towns along 1876 miles of rail. George Kolzow oversees arrangements for the Sidney chamber and the quarterly civic club meeting.

Agent Busy With 4-H Calf Tagging
