Sidney Board Renames Officers and Hires Ten Teachers

Sidney Board of Education met to rename officers Carl Christ Jr. president Jack Knicely vice president Buck Graham secretary and to hire ten staff members for the coming year. They released three teachers and accepted a bid to pave playgrounds at Central and North Ward Schools while outlining remaining faculty needs.

Playground Paving Bid Approved for Central and North Pup Areas

The school board opened three bids for playground paving at Central and North. contract awarded to Lawrence Brachtenbach for 10 755 dollars. Other bidders were Nienhaeser Construction Co. and Pon Wood. The board also named American National Bank and Sidney National Bank as official depositories for school funds.

Athletic Fees Revised At School Board Meeting

The board updated admission fees for school athletic events with no booster tickets for elementary students or adults. Junior and Senior High tickets rise to 4 and 8 dollars, school annual costs covered by senior high. Children priced at 50 cents, adults to 1 and 1.25 dollars. Rising costs drive the red ink.

Treater Shed Destroyed Near Sidney After Weekend Fire

Fire destroyed an oil well treater shed on the Schnell farm lease about five miles east of Sidney. Investigators report a beer party may have sparked the blaze when a can of drip gas was knocked over. Eight to ten partygoers are suspected. no charges filed yet as officials continue inquiry.

Guilty Verdict In Cattle Case In Sterling Colorado

A Logan County jury found John H. Hinrichs Jr. guilty of cattle larceny after about 40 minutes deliberation. Prosecutors said 18 head branded McKenzie were found at a Gurley area farm six days after theft reported February 2. Hinrichs, arrested in Cheyenne County, pleaded guilty. judge Shallenberger delayed sentencing 10 days for appeal and kept a $2000 bond. Jurors included Daniel Brachtenbach Glenn Dickinson and Melvin Kokes.

Panhandle Weather Forecast Sees Cooler Air and Showers

The Panhandle.web forecast predicts considerable cloudiness and cooler conditions with occasional showers tonight and Thursday. Snow is possible in the northern Panhandle tonight with lows from the 30s north to 40s south, and highs in the 50s to 60s. Precipitation chance is about 60 percent for tonight and Thursday, with a five day outlook showing temperatures a few degrees below normal, cooler late in the week, and a warmer start next week. Northwestern Nebraska oil exploration set amid rumors

Reports from Petroleum Information indicate two wildcats planned on the Chadron arch in northwestern Nebraska. Sam G. Harrison reportedly schedules wells in Dawes and Sheridan counties with distances and directions from Chadron. earlier notes mention Mule Creek Oil plans in Sioux County and Texaco tests near Box Butte and Sheridan counties. Past activity on the Chadron arch included the Tucker Drilling and O. N. Beer program of the early 1960s with multiple granite tests and some porosity in Wolfcamp or Dakota formations.

Graveside Rites Scheduled Here

Graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday for Elise McManes 78 who died Monday in Odessa Texas. Dr. William Hunter of Light Memorial Presbyterian Church will officiate. McManes born February 24 1889 in Diller Nebraska. Survived by niece Mrs. Floyd Miller Gurley. She was not a local resident but known through visits to the Miller home.

Sidney Schools Fine Arts Festival Continues Weeklong Event

The Sidney High School Fine Arts Festival runs all week with concerts and plays. Tonight features a choral concert at 7 30 p m in the Junior High Auditorium with sixth through eighth grade choruses and senior high chorus. The week ends Friday with vocal and instrumental solos and ensembles and readings by English and dramatics students.

Rural eighth grade graduates to receive diplomas in Elks Auditorium

Twenty two rural school students will get diplomas Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Cheyenne County eighth grade graduation in the Elks Auditorium. Rev. John Stayton will give the Invocation and Benediction. Diplomas will be handed out by County Superintendent I. A. Caldwell. The program includes piano solos and an accordion solo by various students and a song by Trinity Lutheran School students.

Band Auxiliary To Hold Broom Sale

The Sidney High Band Auxiliary sponsors an annual broom sale to fund future band projects. Items for sale include brooms, mops, cages, pot holders, ironing board covers, and kitchen aids, sold door to door Saturday by band members. Proceeds benefit the band and the Nebraska Federation For the Blind, whose sightless artisans made the items. Band members will also stand at Tru-Line on West Illinois all day Saturday for out of town buyers.

New Hangar Sought for Sidney Municipal Airport

Lloyd Carr, airport manager, asked the Sidney city council for a combined 50 by 60 steel hangar and 20 by 40 office at the airport. He estimates around 20000 dollars to complete including plumbing heating and wiring and urges space for private flying growth and future Frontier Airlines needs. Plans to draft specifications by May 22 and include the project in the 1967 68 budget with possible rental or amortization terms.

Western Nebraska Vocational School weighs aircraft mechanics course

The council received word that a course for airplane mechanics may be added to the curriculum at Western Nebraska Vocational Technical School. The board agreed to fund part of a statewide advanced recruiting program to gauge interest. A joint plan between the Nebraska Department of Aeronautics and the Department of Education is in the talking stage, with a detailed plan expected later this month. Predictions say the program could attract several hundred students to Sidney.
