About 100 home extension clubwomen attended Cheyenne County’s 1949 Home Demonstration Week closing Achiev ement Day at City Auditorium. Thirty six members with twenty years of service were honored, with music, exhibits, and a tea.
Heavy rainfall in the Sidney area from April 30 to May 8 eased crop fears for dryland and irrigation farmers. A total of 2.13 inches drenched soils in less than two weeks, benefiting wheat and beet growers who had faced wind, heat, and prior dry spells. Temperatures near freezing Thursday night caused little damage, and field work was expected to resume by Tuesday as soils dried. Side roads were muddy but main roads remained open.
A May program invites parents and children entering kindergarten this fall to visit the north side school on May 17 at 1 13 pm for residents north of the Union Pacific tracks and the junior high building on May 1 4 for residents south of the tracks at 1 15 pm. Children must be five by October 1 to enroll.
Mrs. George Cordray in Sidney received a corsage of seven baby orchids sent by her son Dale who serves as an electrician's mate with the navy at Pearl Harbor. The flowers flew from Hawaii via Air Express reaching on Mother's Day weekend and remained fresh and cool after a long trip. Cordray said her son has been hospitalized at Pearl Harbor but plans to return to shipboard soon.
Sidney Gun Club trap team scored 244 of 250 in a 25-team shoot sponsored by The Denver Post. Wayne Kennedy fired fifty straight to pace the victory as twelve of fourteen Sidney members beat 92 of 100. The event, held in rain, featured rivals Ala mosa, Monte Vista, Pueblo, Yuma Colo, and Benkleman Nebr.
Mrs. Hazel Jacobe aged 49, a former Sidney resident, died Saturday in Lincoln after an illness of about fifteen months. She once ran a beauty parlor in Sidney before moving to Alabama and then Lincoln. Funeral services are set for today. Survivors include her husband and two sons.
The Fulton Diesel engine, first of its kind in Sidney, is expected to be installed within six weeks. Shipped on five freight cars, four unloaded, with the base moving to the south side expansion. If on schedule, unit ready by July 1, boosting city power capacity.
Young farmers clubs form in Cheyenne County and near Sunol and Colton to share up-to-date farming practices. May meetings featured soil conservation talks by Lee Girardot and Joe Styskal, with Colton-area group planning a livestock program by W. W. Derrick from the Ag College.
Francis Butterfield of Sidney was elected president of District 8 at the Christian church convention gathering in Alliance. Earl Bledsoe of Sidney was chosen state board member. The all day meeting in the First Christian Church marked the 100th anniversary of organized missionary work and the 75th anniversary of the women's division.
The Greater Cheyenne County Safety Council promotes a May safety program titled To Check Accidents, Double Check Your Car. Harold Keith urges all car and truck owners to visit their garages for a double check of safety equipment, linking maintenance to reducing fatalities nationwide.
Farmers in Cheyenne County plant windbreaks with cooperation from the Soil Conservation District and extension service. About 10,000 trees were obtained for planting on cooperators farms and 425 Clarke McNary trees were ordered. Notable belts include Harold From at Lodgepole and E F Mohart at Sidney, with several other cooperators named. The effort aims to reduce erosion and beautify fields, with shelter belts on irrigated land and farmsteads. The SCS notes growing interest and hopes for even more tree planting in coming years.
Western Nebraska's largest National Guard unit Company K 134th Infantry Sidney seeks two Second Lieutenants. Applications to Capt. Lawrence M. Clinton or Sgt. Jack Baker. Eligible men must have Army service in the first three grades as noncoms be 32 or younger and meet defined qualifications.
The City Council approved a 100000 administrative budget for the fiscal year May 1 to April 30. The largest item is a 30000 streets recommendation. New fire equipment and sewer extension costs appear, cemetery funds drop by 1000, street costs rise 5000 to cover stockpiling and seal coating.
Private funeral services were held for Stella W. Holms 63 at Gehrig Funeral Home. She died Friday at her son Frank’s home in Sidney after a yearlong illness. Cremation followed in Denver with burial planned in Exeter Nebraska. Holms survived by two children, a brother, a sister. she was an Eastern Star member.
A public recital by the St Patrick Academy music pupils will be held in the school auditorium Wednesday at eight o'clock. The program features a playlet with many performers including Jerome Koester William Kirwin Bonnie Lou McDaniel Phyllis Harris Bonita Lou Bartels Louis Kraus and dozens more with Linda Hopkins as accompanist.
Nova E Tarpenning of 801 9th Avenue applies for a beer license at 1034 Illinois St The Log Cabin Tavern has been closed since the first of the month due to no new license Leo Hoppes formerly ran the tavern and seeks a new location to apply for a license. hearing set for May 20.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce was urged Thursday night to aid a complete revaluation of real estate. M. W. Osborn proposed the study, backed by A. J. Jorgenson and others. Osborn cited Sidney’s tax valuations as out of line with similar cities and said he has figures. The board of directors will consider the request, with officers not stating stance. The meeting also reviewed general Chamber finances amid plans for the 1949 program and district teachers convention expected to draw about 1200 visitors, with free entertainment obligations for the host city.
A 1941 Ford five passenger coupe sustained heavy damage in a two car crash about three and a half miles south of Sidney at 3 15 Sunday afternoon. Sheriff W W Schulz said James F Spaulding Amherst Colo drove the Ford. The Ford was side swiped by a 1938 Plymouth backed from a driveway by Norman D McKay Sidney. Estimated damage to the Ford was 200 dollars. the Plymouth suffered lighter damage.
An anonymous correspondent recounts a tale of a girl who earned money while her mother shopped at Greenlees. The child’s hat collected dimes nickels and pennies totaling over a dollar from passersby, prompting the mother to wonder if the money is taxable.
Fort Sidney Days events begin with a Kangaroo Court targeting men unable to grow a beard to meet specs. Lions Club leads, with carnival attractions by Forsythe and Dewis Shows and downtown street setup. Governor Val Peterson may attend opening remarks as June 23 24 and 25 festival plans progress.
The Cheyenne County Soil Conservation Service reports a spring surge in conservation activity across irrigated and dry land farms. Contouring of small grain and row crops expands, irrigation structures attract interest, grassed waterways and pasture grooves rise in popularity, with ongoing tree planting and water management efforts guiding a broader program through March into May.
Final services were held Saturday for Mrs. Katherine Sterkel 34 who died after a year long illness. Rites were at St. Pauls Lutheran Church with Rev Hy Dorn officiating. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors include four children and numerous Schnell relatives. Pallbearers were five brothers and John Bauer Jr.
