A school bond election attracted fewer than 300 votes yet passed by a 208 to 60 unofficial margin for a 33 thousand dollar issue to add to the north side school building. Ward Two gave the strongest support with 86 yes of 97 votes.
A weekly publication is issued for residents of Ordville and the Sioux Ordnance Depot with Mrs. Cecla Hendricks as editor. Sponsored by Federal Employees Union Local 1029, the paper is not an official depot publication though Lt. Col. James O. Baker congratulated the staff in the first issue. The four page tabloid carries local advertising from Sidney stores, with potential expansion if support grows.
The Sidney Board of Education reorganized Monday night installing one new member Rae L. Jones elected at the annual election last month. Officers chosen include President A. E. Wright Vice-President A. O. Olson Secretary K. S. Agnew and members Mrs. B. H. Grimm Dr. Hull Cook Rae L. Jones.
A satire in a recent Love Down column on federal compulsory health insurance was included in the Congressional Record. Rep. A L Miller said the column might ease tensions in Congress over President Truman's proposal branded socialized medicine.
The Ellsworth Building at 10th Avenue and Jackson Street opens for public inspection in Sidney. Tenants include The Sidney Safety Vault Co and The Platte Valley Finance Co, with Ellsworth Tax Service offering private conferences and a complete tax solution backed by a large library. The Traine Climate Changer system manages heat and humidity in private rooms.
A tri county meeting of the Royal Neighbors of America is set for May 26 in Sidney with lodges from Kimball Devel and Cheyenne counties represented. Participating lodges include Kimball Potter Sidney Chap pell Lodgepole and Big Springs. Plans include a School of Instruction in the afternoon a banquet by the Presbyterian Ladies and an evening program open to the public at Sidney City Auditorium.
Eighth grade exercises are scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock in Cheyenne County. Examinations are currently being conducted this week at the county courthouse.
A 140 foot oil derrick at Ohio Oil Co. test site east of Gurley draws wide attention as Cheyenne County’s first major oil test proceeds. Kerr-McGee Co. drills under contract, location on Mary Egging farm after over two years of testing. Ohio plans two more locations pending results. Diesel powered rig expected to reach depths beyond ten thousand feet.
Ohio Oil Co. tests the Gurley site with surface pipe cemented and drilling gear ready. Resident geologist R E Beitman will log the well for the company, but reports go to Casper and will not be released locally. Observers expect a possible ten thousand feet bore, with progress to be shared only when the Casper office approves.
A Sidney police letter from Herbert H. Echtermeyer of Live Stock National Bank Omaha praises city courtesy. He recalls a short parking stop and a polite courtesy ticket, stating he will adhere to Sidney's rules and hopes the town remains courteous.
A 1 30 dessert luncheon will open the annual May Fellowship Day at the First Methodist Church under the Sidney Council of Church Women. The program theme is Freedom's Foundation The Christian Home and features the movie A Boy and His Prayer. Local organizers are Mrs David Els and Mrs J O Lobb. The public is invited.
Four soloists are tentatively booked for the 1949 1950 civic music series Iva Kitchell Wini fred Heckman Frank Edwinn Abba Bogin are listed with dates to be announced next fall Membership cards will be issued then those out of town or new residents may join via Mrs J R Taylor 1620 Jackson St Rev Howard Osborne serves as president of the civic music association this year.
Sidney Nebraska workers office reports a persistent shortage of unskilled labor and farm hands across four counties. Director Francis Hiner notes high demand, with married couples offered housing and at least 150 dollars monthly, singles about 125 dollars. Harvest demand uncertain, but past surplus suggests availability. Migration and new entrants expected to boost supply in 60 days.
W. P. Bullock and Violet Shepherd will attend a Panhandle agents meeting in Bridgeport next Wednesday May 11. The gathering will finalize plans for the district camp to be held at Mitchell June 15 to 18.
Arrangements completed by the Sidney Chamber of Commerce and Sioux Ordnance Depot officials to establish an SOD Newcomers club welcoming new residents to the Sidney trade territory. Depot agents will report on new families so merchants can present gifts. Harold Katz helped, L. E. Wamsley reports a good reception and 10 to 12 newcomers have already benefited from introductory prizes.
Memorial services honor Judge J L Tewell in Cheyenne County Courthouse district courtroom. Judge I J Nisley will convene the May term at 9 am, recess at 2 pm to preside over the memorial. Supreme Court members and local bar officials attend, with Chief Justice Simmons and Justice Carter among those likely present. Public invited to attend.
The Sidney Odd Fellow and Rebekah Lodges will hold a joint meeting in the I O O F Hall Monday evening to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the I O O F Lodge. The Chappell Odd Fellow and Rebekah Lodges will be special guests and Judge I J Nisley of North Platte will be principal speaker.
H A Stover retires after thirty years with the plumbing firm as Carl Hutchison buys The H A Stover Plumbing Co. Hutchison, a former partner, will continue the business well known for major Sidney buildings and for contracts on Sioux Ordnance Depot. Announcement appears in The Telegraph.
The Horns relocate to 1212 Illinois Street emphasizing their Pontiac dealership while retaining the old 1700 Illinois Street site for Willys sales and Mobilgas service. remodeling included exterior and interior makeovers with new Pontiac display signs and a busy weekend public invitation. Local contractors and business partners join in congratulating the opening.
Funeral services will be held Saturday for Katherine Sterkel 34 who died Thursday after a yearlong illness at a local hospital. Rites at St Pauls Lutheran Church conducted by Rev Hy Domn burial Greenwood Cemetery Gehrig Funeral Home in charge. Born Scottsbluff October 13 1914 she is survived by four children her parents five brothers and six sisters.
Hart Wilson Webb, a farm employee near Dalton, was injured last week when a tractor accident crushed his ankle. Deputy Sheriff Arnold Braasch transported him to the veterans hospital in Cheyenne on Tuesday for treatment.
Farmers in Sidney and nearby towns welcomed soaking rain after a spell of record heat and strong winds. rainfall eased drought risk for wheat and beets as temperatures peaked with 97 in Burwell and 91 in Money, while lilac blossoms surged early and field work resumed across the state.
Charles W. Flick, 55, released in February from the Wisconsin State Penitentiary after a one year term for larceny, allegedly burglarized a room at Mrs. Bertha Bentley’s home in Sidney. He was arrested shortly after 4 am, found afoot on the town’s east edge, and jailed on burglary charges.
