Spraying Cherries and Plums to Save Crops
Extension News Service reports that spraying fruit trees as blossoms fall and again before ripening can boost yields. Two to three bushels per mature cherry tree and at least two bushels per plum tree are typical, with pests potentially wiping out crops. A lime sulfur and arsenate of lead mix is advised, not for European or Japanese plums or peaches, at 50 gallons per treatment for 15 to 20 cents per spray.

The University Department of Plant Pathology will conduct experiments with potato seed treatments in cooperation with major Western Nebraska growers. Beginning in May at Chadron, researchers aim to find the simplest most effective control for diseases like scab blackleg and stem rot under local conditions. The current method: soak seed 30 minutes before cutting in four ounces of corrosive sublimate per 30 gallons of water, enough for 30 bushels. use only in wooden containers as it is highly poisonous and potatoes should not be eaten or fed to stock.
