Eastern Nebraska farmers face more rain as showers continue in the Sidney area delaying spring field work. Oats and barley seeding near completion, corn planting begun in southeast counties, and sugar beet planting nearly finished. Weather keeps soil moisture high with best conditions reported, though alfalfa grows slowly and livestock feeding relies on hay.
Sidney Improve Ment Project education committee seeks more scholarships for graduating seniors at Sidney High School to incentives academic achievement and college continuation. They cite local, sponsor driven awards and note national offers are often inapplicable due to qualifications and distance.
Weather outlook shows tonight and Thursday with scattered showers and partly cloudy skies. Low temperatures around 40 to 45 while daytime highs reach the 65 to 70 range. The five day forecast calls for average daytime near 70 and nighttime in the 40s with brief thunder showers clearing before the weekend.
Cheyenne County Boy Scout leaders were honored Sunday at the Wye-Braska Area Council annual meeting in Scottsbluff. New board members include W W Schulz of Sidney W H Dearing of Sioux Ordnance Depot and Dean Hagemeister of Potter Vergal A Winn of Sidney. Climax of the program was the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service to boyhood under council. The ceremony was led by A H Williams with Post 70 Explorer Scouts. honorees were A E Johansen Hay Springs Rev Leslie A Moore Gering and Dr W Max Gentry Gering Orchids were given to their ladies.
Frank Mattoon, Cheyenne County Cancer Society chairman, reports the county fund campaign is ahead of last year. Gurley and Mrs. Robert Rauner report $206 collected in their area, Dalton campaign $175 received so far, Lawrence Marrin says, with rural solicitation under Henry Gell. Coffees planned by Mrs Ralph Welch for Sidney residents begin next week. call 3700 to help.
Melvin Sick a 23 year old husband of a former Sidney girl died at Chappell hospital from injuries after being run over by a farm plow north of Chap pell He had fallen from the tractor Monday afternoon and was pinned under the machine for more than eighteen hours His wife Ruby Schoenholtz of Sidney described finding him in the field Tuesday morning He leaves a year old daughter and two brothers Richard Lodgepole and Ronald Goodview Funeral arrangements have not been completed at Chappell Mortuary Fire 3
Work by Fremont Construction Co progresses on widening and lengthening Sidney’s concrete runway to 4,500 feet by 10 feet. A 1,100 by 100 foot northern strip and a 600 by 100 foot southern strip are added, and the old 2,800 foot runway widens to 100 feet. City financed with federal aid as Sidney eyes commercial airline service and possible Civil Aeronautics Board routing.
The Duis Studio at 537 10th Ave invites the public to an open house Saturday from 1 to 8 PM. Alvin and Adelaide Duis host guests to view remodeling, with four hostesses guiding tours and door prizes. Special discounts on film and flash bulbs accompany the event and highlight the studio’s portrait and commercial photography work.
The Credit Bureau of Cheyenne County received a 1958 achievement award at the Upper Midwest Associated Credit Bureau conference in Winnipeg Canada for outstanding work in the collection field. The local bureau, now at 934 Jackson St, qualifies for national competition in Los Angeles this July, as its regional award includes Nebraska Iowa Minnesota North Dakota South Dakota and parts of Wisconsin and Winnipeg.
The USDA sets the 1958 wheat penalty payment at $1.09 per bushel, per Don Rapp, ASC manager. Previous years show payments of $1.12 in 1957, $1.07 in 1956, $1.13 in 1955, and $1.12 in 1954, making 1958 the second lowest on record, calculated as 45 percent of parity with parity at $2.42 as of May 1.
Multiple Sidney area crashes caused heavy damage and injuries over the weekend. Russell J. Crabb, 17, Lodge Pole, struck a bridge causing about 210 in damage. A three-car crash at Illinois Street and 10th Avenue involved Charles Furrey, 17, Bronson, Arnold Braasch, 55, Sidney, and Reuben Martinez, 55, S. O., with total damage listed from 10 to 150. Clifford N. Peters, 38, Alliance, sustained 250 damage after Jack Thurow, 23, Sidney, pulled from a parking space. Lee G. Houter, 56, S. C. D., backed into Charles Hoppes, 46, Sidney, with 15 and 25 damages respectively. Gerrald D. Sample, 34, Chappell, had 300 damage on Route 30 after a northbound Thoen, 51, Cactus Ariz., collided on the highway. State Trooper Del Shipley noted 75 damage on the Thoen car, while a third accident sent two to Kimball hospital as Lawrence B. Jones, 47, Kimball, veered into a ditch to avoid a slow car, suffering minor injuries and his son Michael, 10, a fractured arm. both hospitalized. Patrolman Roy Anderson estimated total damage near 700.

Don Rapp, manager of the local ASC office, surveyed area food stocks for a simulated bomb event. Perishables would cover five days, canned goods twenty one days, based on current local supplies. Sidney Beef Co plans 80,000 pounds dressed beef stock, not included in the survey.
A Sidney teacher, Roy Oak, is selected for a six week science course at Stephen F. Austin State College in Nacogdoches Texas. The program runs June 3 to July 15 with two weeks general science and four weeks biology. Another Sidney teacher, Glenn Ackerson, will attend a math course at the University of Nebraska.
Mrs Bill Lyons of 2319 San Merino reports tulips in her Sidney garden blossoming unusually with some stems bearing two blooms and one stem with three blooms. She invites interested locals to visit and view the plants, noting it is the first time such profuse blossoming has occurred in her experience.
Mrs. George Fleming believes she has the only Pin Oak tree in Sidney though many doubt its viability here. The tree came from her Lincoln-based father W. C. Phelps who grew it in his yard there and sent it to her. It was planted in her back yard last spring and buds are forming as it leaves out soon.
Western Nebraska United Chambers of Commerce will invite Sidney to a September meeting to be extended during the WMCC regular session at Crawford. Attending from Sidney are Fred Thompson and M R Sigler. others may join. WMCC covers civic clubs across the Nebraska Panhandle and sandhills.
In a Civil Defense drill a simulated 1 000 kiloton bomb was to strike near Sioux Ordnance Depot with fallout extending from 7 miles southeast of Sidney to 200 miles northeast. Officials warned thousands could die and vast damage follow unless evacuation and defense plans succeeded. The test showed the rapid pace of modern warfare as two bomber aircraft dropped atomic bombs near Omaha and Council Bluffs while Lincoln faced a concurrent blast.
