The Fort Sidney Motor Hotel reported 129 employees in its first three months and an average payroll of fifty five staff. The January to March payroll totaled 24900, with April expected to approach 25000. Manager Chester Johnson said the hotel adds a valuable new industry and tourism is rising, with peak volume likely in June or July.

He lived in Gurley 41 years and managed the Gurley elevator for 38 years with Farmers Cooperative. Funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. from Grace Lutheran Gurley with Rev. Bartels, born April 4 1897 in Deshler, moved to Gurley in 1917, married Hannah Kieselhorst in 1918. Dr. Vernon Hungate chairing a three-member advisory group visits Sidney and four other cities this week to select a site for Nebraska's experimental state school for mentally retarded children. Sites include Central City Cozad Lexington Alliance with final choice weight on Board of Control. The pilot school would serve about 30 children with a five-member staff.

A Sidney sale last week at Sidney Sales Pavilion drew about 600 head through the ring. Steer calves sold to $33.40, heifer calves brought $29.10, and yearling steers brought $28.65. Fat butcher bulls topped at $22.60, fat hogs to $20.20, feeder pigs $13 to $19, and ewes with lambs sold readily at $22.50.
