Chappell's Mayor Dies After One Day In Office
Vern M Wiest aged 60, new mayor of Chappell, died Wednesday afternoon likely from a heart attack while driving a 1949 Ford one ton truck. He collapsed on Highway 30 east of Chappell around 5 40 pm. Eyewitnesses said a passing car had just gone by when the truck veered into a ditch. A doctor and patrolman said a blood clot to the heart caused his death. the incident is not considered a motor vehicle fatality. Wiest had been superintendent of schools in the 1930s and lived on a farm near town. He leaves a wife, a son in dental school at the University of Nebraska, and a daughter in college in Colorado. The truck suffered severe exterior damage with the front wheels knocked off.

Hospital Is One Fourth Completed
The community hospital is one fourth completed as of a Wednesday estimate by the architect’s representative. The general contractor confirmed progress despite a weather delay. The board reviewed finances and delinquent pledges, noting about 96 thousand dollars owed, with more than half readily collectible.
