Soil moisture favorable in Nebraska wheat areas
Nebraska’s soil moisture conditions are favorable for the first time in months. Subsoil moisture in main wheat regions is better than last year, though surface moisture is lower. Tests from April to the first week of May show average moisture depth at 43.2 inches, with 58 percent moderately wet and 39 percent slightly damp. Summer fallow fields reach deeper penetration than continuous crops, while topsoil dried by winter winds caused localized wind erosion and some anticipated abandonment. Wheat growth is strong overall with winter wheat averaging 9.8 inches, highest in the south central area.

Armed Forces Day Tours At Soo Saturday
Armed Forces Day will be observed next Saturday May 15 with public tours of the Soo Ordinance Depot. Tours run 1 to 3 p m from the main gate, transport provided from there. Visitors will see equipment photographs ammunition vehicles and parts in Bar racks 5 near the main gate. The program includes films on national defense and Army activities with Col Pennington Maj Calfee Maj Drake Ben O Connor and others listed as organizers and hosts.

West Sidney Gas Plant to Start by June Fifteenth
Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Co of Hastings plans about six million dollars in improvements to handle gas from the West Sidney field. Ohio Oil Co said gas should be available by year end with a new gas treating plant in the field. Ohio announces construction of a new gas processing plant three miles north of Sidney, with Stearns Roger Manufacturing Co. of Denver to build it. Work begins after design and material scheduling, aiming for completion by mid December, employing about fifty workers at peak. The plant will have an initial capacity of 7.5 to 12 million cubic feet per day and will produce butane, propane, and natural gasoline, with hydrocarbon liquids extracted before pipeline delivery.

A sideswiping collision on Highway 19 one mile south of Gurley caused $300 in damage with no injuries. The 1950 Plymouth driven by Jack Nienhaeser and the 1953 Plymouth driven by Wesley Klemke each sustained about $250 in damage. Klemke, 18, from Dalton, drove a car owned by Ole Brogren.
