Winter’s retreat gave Cheyenne County a cold weekend with a low of 27 degrees and snow totaling about five inches on Saturday. Moisture measured at 0.62 inches helped avert a hard freeze, while Friday and Sunday added minor precipitation. Temperatures varied from 23 to 42 degrees across the period, with Monday forecast for milder weather.
A string of ice induced crashes Monday morning left one serious injury, many property damages, and several minor injuries. The worst hit was Tiny Nacey of Los Angeles, 35, who suffered a skull fracture but was reported recuperating at a local hospital.
H G Spearon chairman of Cheyenne County Savings Bond Committee announced high first quarter sales of Series E and H bonds totaling 689 662 50 dollars, reaching 76 9 percent of the county 1954 quota. Leland Hall Nebraska Savings Bonds official cited statewide sales of 41 419 552 09 dollars or 43 9 percent of the 1954 quota as evidence of thrift and investment in U S savings bonds. Earl O Shreve National Director noted first quarter 1954 sales rose 15 percent from a year earlier and highlighted growing cash value of outstanding bonds, totaling over 37 billion dollars, the highest in program history.
The Sidney Public School instrumental music department presents its grand spring concert on Tuesday May 11 at 8 pm in the Sidney High School Auditorium. All bands and ensembles from fourth grade to high school perform plus a junior high band, senior high band, grade school band, fourth grade flutophone, high school dance band, and girls triple trio with a clarinet quartet. Director Dean Killion, assisted by Miss Nancy Button and Miss Barbara Gilmore, urges strong attendance and notes booster ticket holders admitted free. Tickets are sold at the high school with no advance sales.
The Sidney Jaycees win approval from the Fair Board to sponsor night stock car racing at the county fair grounds. Racing will begin on Saturdays on a new dustless, arc light illuminated track with lights added at track corners. Over 15 local drivers and entrants from Sterling and nearby towns expected to race.
Twenty eight people from Kimball Deuel Morrill Box Butte and Cheyenne Counties attended a Friday 4-H Leader Training at the City Auditorium. Instruction covered three divisions foods clothing and home management with a tea served later by foods division members.
Mrs. Stewart Brown county citizenship chairman for home extension clubs announces a meeting for all club citizenship chairmen on Friday May 14. Time and place to be announced later. She invites other organizations to send representatives to discuss current affairs.
The Family Living Survey results from Cheyenne County March will be presented at a countywide meeting today at 1 30 p m in the City Auditorium. Dr Otto Heiberg will interpret the survey findings Heiberg is a Dannebrog Nebraska native with degrees from Drake University and the University of Nebraska He has served in Germany with Military Government Religious Affairs and later coordinated community service at the University of Nebraska His work focuses on strengthening community life across economic educational religious recreational aesthetic cultural and other lines All interested are urged to attend today’s meeting.
The 24th National 4-H Club Camp will be held in Washington DC from June 16 to 23, 1954 under the Cooperative Extension Service and land‑grant colleges. Nebraska delegates include Janet Kuska, Jean Bennett, Arley Waldo DeWitt, and Rodney Swanson with Dorothea Holstein and Guy Davis as leaders. Alaska Hawaii and Puerto Rico expected to attend.
Community song fest at Potter Legion Hall on Wednesday May 5 starts at 8 pm under American Legion and Auxiliary auspices. In observance of National Music Week proceeds from free will offerings benefit the Potter Public Schools music department.
Three Rural Youth honors were announced at the Spring Banquet in the Potter Youth Center. Miss Pat Pelster won the Rural Youth Leadership award from Radio Station WNAX Yankton SD, earning an all expenses paid trip to the Western Regional Conference at Peru Nebraska in June. Honorary members chosen were Mrs. Charles Ham of Sidney and John Davison of Dalton.
A two day Sewing Clinic in Cheyenne County is planned for May 10 and 11 under the extension department. Miss Dora Huestle says Miss Helen Rocky will lead, with sessions 9 30 a m to 3 p m on the City Auditorium main floor. Attendance is limited to 13 with two places remaining.
State Engineer L N Ress reports mixed views on spending for a four lane free interstate route through Nebraska funded by 60 40 federal state match. A US 30 Highway Association meeting may signal sentiment. Route would run US 6 Omaha to Lincoln US 34 to Grand Island and US 30 to Wyoming with toll alternatives possible.
TV reception in this area was excellent on Friday a cloudy but dust free day. Pictures and sound path were clear all day with just a hint of snow. Mrs D J Scharrel of 107 East Drive reported the Fred & Fair program came clearly on channel 2 from Denver. The soda shop program for teenagers came in very well too according to reports from Potter Scotts Bluff and Gering. Saturday which was cloudy but snowy was a bad day for reception.
Cheyenne County Extension Sponsoring Board will name a new chairman after Ver lin Livingston resigns. Livingston has led the board since its creation. A successor will be chosen at the May meeting, possibly by appointment to fill the remainder of the term.
The State Crippled Children's Clinic will be held in Ogallala on Saturday May 8 under Services for Crippled Children with Elks Lodge cooperation. Registration begins 7 a m MST and should be completed by noon. All children must have referrals from their local physicians.
Harry H. Boyd 68 died Thursday near Sutherland Nebraska while traveling from Modesto California to eastern Nebraska for a golden wedding anniversary. Services held Monday at the Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Townsend presiding. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Survived by Meta his wife six children a brother and four sisters.
Mr and Mrs Guy Ferry learn of a second death in their family within a week Frank Ferry died in Ida Grove Iowa last week followed by brother Carl dying in Guthrie Center Iowa Burial services were held for Carl last Thursday Carl was married with two children both Frank and Carl were well known locally as former ball players in the area
The Cheyenne County Extension Board approved County Agricultural Agent Ivan Liljegren to study at Colorado College Fort Collins from June 28 to July 16 on an Ak- Sar-Ben scholarship.
Two new oil locations emerged in Cheyenne County with Ohoi Oil reporting Fleming No 7 to be drilled on Ralph Fleming land in Lorenzo and a rig moved onto Pauline Thimgahn land in Mohatt near Sidney. Details include precise section coordinates and ties to nearby wells, plus results from Kimball County wells and notes on gas shows and oil rates.
Seed certification applications are due May 20 at the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association in Lincoln. County agents have forms and officials can provide details. Varieties eligible for certification include oats, spring barley, hybrid corn, soybeans, sorghums, Sudan grass, winter and spring wheats, and winter barley, with a list of recommended varieties specified.
