Artesian Well Delivers 800 Gallons a Minute Near Bridgeport
The John Thompson farm southeast of Bridgeport, just across the Morrill County line, reports an artesian well flowing about 800 gallons per minute from a 192 foot bore. Harold Thompson drilled the well on April 22, and it initially produced a gusher after bypassing an obstruction. The well streams six inches high, with white sand and clay at times, and irrigation use is anticipated once sediment clears.

Cheyenne County faced two weather extremes over the weekend a damaging wind event followed by beneficial moisture. A Friday wind swept the panhandle with gusts up to sixty miles an hour while North Platte Valley saw dust and a near electrical storm. Rain and snow moved in from Sidney overnight into Saturday boosting soil moisture and aiding recent spring plantings though topsoil and crop damage may lie in exposed valley fields.

Nebraska reports April 1 wheat stocks at 31,909,000 bushels in all positions, up from 22,675,000 a year earlier, with January 1, 1949 total at 49,850,000. Farm stocks stand at 14,938,000 vs 16,254,000 last year. off farm stocks include 5,863,000 in interior mills and 2,557,000 in merchant mills. Rye totals April 1 are 540,000 in all positions, down from 731,000 last year. Off farm rye stocks are 90,000 versus 135,000 a year ago. Nationwide April 1 wheat totals exceed 576,000,000, a peak surpassed only by 1942 and 1943.

The Sidney public restroom idea will be funded by the extension group, the Sidney WCTU, a Methodist Church circle, and East Sidney Draw school, with facilities in the courthouse basement. Violet Shepherd reported on the state home extension council meeting in Grand Island, noting plans to fund a foreign student at the University of Nebraska. County councils will donate four dollars each to cover another semester, plus a voluntary Achiev ement Day collection on May 6. The council also discussed feedback to extension club women in England.
