The forecast calls for generally fair conditions with widely scattered thundershowers tonight and tomorrow afternoon and evening. Tonight’s low is 45 to 48 degrees and tomorrow’s high ranges from 75 to 76 degrees.
The revised U S Department of Agriculture grain standards begin June 15 marking the first major change since 1934. Nebraska Wheat Growers Association and other farm groups champion tighter rules to reduce foreign material and improve hard winter wheat quality.
Northwestern Bell expert Francisco told the Sidney Rotary Club push button long distance service is possible soon with electronic brains routing calls across circuits. He described automatic billing and direct connections and noted solar power and desalination advances may solve energy and water needs in cities like Los Angeles. He warned science is advancing faster than the public understands.
A truck carrying 51 Mexican nationals overturned on Highway 19 about 13 miles northwest of Chadron. Mrs. Maria Helena Valdez, 21, Weslaco Texas, died with a crushed head. Juan Guevara, 45, Weslaco, lost a right arm and later required amputation. Rescue units and ambulances transported the injured to Chadron Municipal Hospital. temporary shelter was set at the Chadron Fire Station.
If weather holds, Sidney will begin its annual spring trash collection next Wednesday. City Manager Murrey Fuller says the plan is to start on the north side, with the street and waste departments handling lawn clippings and tree limbs. The six day schedule splits two days north of the Union Pacific tracks, two days between the UP and Burlington tracks, and two days south of Burlington tracks.
The second deep oil test in western Nebraska ends in failure as Shell plans to plug back Schneider No. 2 in the Heidemann Field Kimball County. Logs will show if any more oil is recoverable while drilling moves to Colorado with Weld County plans looming. Ten deep tests have produced no success in the Panhandle with costs exceeding $100000 each.
Margaret Ann Olson named fifth entrant for the 1957 Miss Ft. Sidney Pageant on May 17. She aims to represent Sidney in the Miss Nebraska Pageant and as Ft. Sidney Days queen June 21-22. A brunette, she plays flute for her talent and has wide musical training including piano organ and piccolo. She is drum major of the Sidney High School band and active in Masque and Gavel NHS Presbyterian church Westminster Fellowship Homecoming Queen candidate and Keen Teen board member.
C. R. Ommen of 804 Linden Street told Sidney police yesterday that his garden house had its windows or siding slashed sometime between Wednesday night and early yesterday morning.
Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce president Bob Wait will run for state vice president at the Nebraska Jaycee convention in Scottsbluff and Scottsbluff Gering Jaycees host the event. He is among 15 candidates for nine offices with 600 delegates expected. Wendell Ford will speak at the Saturday banquet. other candidates include Ed Burke and Bob Scoville. Sidney attendees listed include Hank Meysenburg and Bob Kallhoff among about a dozen locals.
The Sidney Board of Education is expected to receive the proposed budget from Superintendent O J Weymouth at the Monday night meeting. The $511 050 budget may drop from the current half million plus amount. a public hearing has drawn little attendance in recent years. The board may also vote on transferring two industrial tracts of 16 and 20 acres from the district to District 77 to attract lower taxes and encourage new business relocation.
Cheyenne County expects final winter wheat seedings near 205000 acres, down from 209433 last year, with about 800 of 1351 farms overseeded after a June 20 date. ASC manager Don Rapp cites soil bank gains and wind erosion reducing roughly 14000 acres, with many overseeded farms likely to come into compliance.
Thomas A. Sprinkall, 76, died yesterday in Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after a six week stay. A Sidney native since 1888, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and farmed near Sidney Draw. Funeral services start tomorrow at 10 a.m. at First Methodist Church, with Rev. H. P. Bolinger officiating. burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials to Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital are requested. Survived by one sister, Bertha E. Mitchell, plus nieces and nephews.
Capt. Robert Armstrong aged 32, son of Floyd Armstrong of Sidney, was killed in a plane crash yesterday at Pittsburgh Texas. He was married with two daughters and stationed at Little Rock Arkansas. Relatives say Floyd Armstrong Mrs Floyd Armstrong and Earl Armstrong of Laramie will travel to St Joseph Missouri for the funeral on Monday.
The Sidney Business & Professional Women's Club hosts Bernadine Orloff on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Central Ward School auditorium with a following silver tea. Her talk on Can Peace Between Israel and the Arabs Be Achieved? is part of a mid east series then she speaks to the Sidney Rotary Club Monday night. Mrs Orloff, a free lance journalist, has filed for NBC and written for the Kansas City Star after trips to Egypt and Israel in 1953 and 1956 totaling seven months.
The Defense Department asked Congress for authority to spend 1.56 billion on military construction overseas and in all states except Wyoming. Included is 249 thousand dollars for the Sioux Ordnance Depot described as a maintenance facility. Local officials have not been told the exact plan for the ordnance depot and the last major project was a steam plant completed last year for ammunition storage and renovation.
Civic Music Association reports under $1,000 raised so far with only $825 in memberships, far below the $1,850 needed for two concerts by Johnny Eaton and His Quartet and the Columbus Boys Choir. Officials urge late donations with a Saturday deadline and headquarters at Hardy-Clark Furniture Store.
Groups wishing to participate in Sidney United Fund distributions must register. Board chair Jack Knicely named Dr C J Cornelius Jr and Mrs Helen Bush to interview organizations, estimate needs, and draft a timetable for the fall drive. Interviews will assess eligibility and compile budgets before the major campaign.
Sidney Iron Works has given numerous historic pieces to the Cheyenne County Historical Association. Items include a late 1800s wagon and buggy stoke reamer, an ox yoke center, a spoke reamer, a buggy spoke, five mule shoes, and a wagon jack from Camp Clarke days. A stolen old plow faded to the outside before removal. The group plans a county museum in Sidney this June and will accept gifts or loaned items for the summer exhibition.
Local elevator sources quote No 1 Wheat at 195 per bushel and No 2 Wheat at 3 94 per bushel. This reflects current market levels for wheat variety pricing in the area.
Cheyenne County business men will be asked to defend figures on their 1957 inventories filed with the assessor. Assessor Roy Gish says most returns are correct but some will be audited with books and records produced. A few cases show questionable returns, including a large firm with a small inventory. Justin Haynes Co. of Denver handles the audits where figures appear too low.
