Food costs lower than in the 1950s says UNL expert
Dr. Khem Shahani, University of Nebraska, reports that in the 1950s consumers spent over 20 percent of income on food while last year it fell to 15 to 16 percent. He notes rising marketing and manufacturing costs exceed raw food price increases as supermarkets add non food goods and conveniences. The average U.S. worker wage rose from 2.53 to 3.01 per hour between 1964 and 1968.
