Former Depot COs Die Within Months at Sioux Army Depot
Two former Sioux Army Depot commanders Col. James O. Baker served 1948 to 1950 and Col. Luther M. Smoak 1952 to 1954 have died in recent months. Baker died last October in Idaho from a heart attack during a hunting trip. Smoak died at Arlington Community Hospital of Hodgkins disease with burial at Arlington. Baker’s last active assignment was White Sands New Mexico and he lived in Monticello New York. Smoak’s survivors include wife Edith and multiple children. Baker oversaw a 1949 blizzard impact and facility fires at the depot. Smoak presided over large ammo storage and repair during postwar drawdown and added a 750000 ammunition services facility plus a natural gas utility system and other improvements.

Farm Field Display Set April 15
More than a quarter of a million dollars in the latest farm machinery will be shown at a Cheyenne County Implement Dealers sponsored field demonstration on April 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, at the ground across the road north from The Egging Co. plant, is 10 miles north and 4 1/2 east of Sidney or four miles south and 4 1/2 east of Gurley. Tractors plows discs one ways chisels and other equipment will be featured. Lunch will be served on the grounds. Co sponsors include Foland Farm Machinery International Harvester Larson Machinery Co Miller Implement Co Grant Equipment Co Krieder and Son Midwest Implement Co Plains Equipment Co Sidney Implement Co and the Sidney Chamber of Commerce agricultural committee. If weather forces a change, April 29 is set as an alternate date.

161 Cattle Lost In March Storm
Orville Schmitt, a Sidney cafe operator long in Imperial, Nebr asks farmers in Imperial area suffered heavy losses in a late March blizzard. One farm reported 162 of 325 cattle perished after cattle were soaked by rain then exposed to freezing winds and snow.

Granary Burns and Contents Lost Near Sioux Army Depot
A granary and its contents burned early Sunday near Sioux Army Depot, destroying a granary, truck, two sows and 15 pigs. The blaze, likely from a lamp used to warm pigs, caused 4000 in building damage and 2000 in truck damage, with pig value unreported. Firefighters also battled separate fires damaging greasy rags in a garage and a Cabela Furniture Co. truck at the fairgrounds road.

Faulty Brakes Blamed For Sunol Truck Smashup
A 1957 Chevrolet carrying wheat ran out of brakes on a county road west of Sunol at 11 a.m. The southbound truck crossed Highway 30, struck a ditch, and crashed onto a small table near the Union Pacific tracks. Driver Lavern H. Flessner, 39, Gurley, escaped injury as the vehicle, a total loss with a torn back axle, toppled and some wheat spilled before being transferred to another truck while en route to Chappell elevator.

Trucks Replace Trains In Valley Mail Delivery Change
Beginning May 23 Scottsbluff residents will notice little change as mail routing shifts from train to truck transport. Mail arrives at Gering from North Platte by Union Pacific train and will be trucked to Alliance then Scottsbluff for distribution. Postmaster Harold Runyon says the move supports using zip code centers as actual distribution hubs, with Alliance serving as the regional center.

Rites Today for Harold From 63 Lodgepole
Funeral services were held at Immanuel Lutheran Church for Harold From 63 of Lodgepole who died last Thursday night in a Cheyenne hospital after a long illness. The Rev. John Schmidt officiated. Burial followed in Lodgepole Cemetery. The Zimmer Funeral Home of Chappell was in charge. Born in 1900 at David City, he was the son of David and Rosanna From. He served in World War I with the 312th Field Remount Squad. He married Hazel Kilgore on September 29, 1920 at Raymond, Nebraska, and they farmed in Deuel County, later moving to a farm south of Lodgepole in 1947. Survivors include his wife two sons Bud and Jim two daughters Jessie June Riley of Culbertson and Marjorie Peterson of Lodgepole thirteen grandchildren a sister Wreatha Stoddard of Amherst Colorado and two brothers Moro and Guy both of David City. Preceding him in death were his parents a brother and a sister.

Vincent Tecl 83 long-time Cheyenne County resident and Potter area farmer died at home in Sidney. Born April 5 1880 in Czechoslovakia he came to the United States in 1912 and farmed north of Potter until 1950 then moved to Sidney. Survived by wife Frances Jure anek and one brother Frank. Rosary at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home Wednesday at 7 30 p m and funeral at St Patrick's Catholic Church Thursday at 9 30 a m with Very Rev Vincent Pelster officiating. Interment Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. John Pavlat, 87, a Nebraska native who came to Lodgepole with her parents in 1878, died Sunday in Denver of a heart attack. She lived in Denver since 1954 with daughter Mrs. Harley Hite, following her husband’s death. Born Feb 21 1877, she married in 1893 and helped shape early regional history. Survived by daughter, son Byron of Rapid City, one grandchild, and relatives. Funeral at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home Wednesday at 10 a.m. with burial in Green.

Don’t Rush I-80 Say Businessmen
In Kimball a meeting of Highway 30 businessmen on the proposed speed up of Interstate 80 construction at the west edge of the Panhandle, 82 percent voted Thursday night to support the original schedule. The vote contradicted an earlier report that Kimball businessmen favored immediate construction, with plans to finish the highway between Kimball and the Wyoming border about 1972. Several business owners, including a motel operator, said investments were based on the original timetable and rushing the completion would not help.
