Sidney pioneer Cap Shaffer dies after long illness
Cap Shaffer 72 a noted Sidney man famed for early work in autos airplanes and racing died after months of illness and 26 days in hospital Funeral services were held at Gehrig Son with Elks rites burial at Greenwood Castle Waston Shaffer born in Sutton Nebraska spent youth in Alliance worked in railroad shops then helped Buick assemble his first car later road tested and raced from 1907 to 1910 he later turned to aviation earning Aero Club of America pilot license No 10 and joined Curtiss backed exhibition tours. story continued on page six.

Washington Officials To Return Prisoner
Cheyenne County Sheriff’s office reports officials from Everett Washington left Thursday to Sidney to return Miss Helen Bucey who surrendered March 12 on forgery charges in Everett. Also, Jack Mason serving a one year term for parole violation was moved to Lincoln Men’s Reformatory by Sheriff Schulz and Roy Bauer.

Dimick No 1 Oil Well Near Fleming Area
Ohio Oil Company announced drilling the Dimick No 1 on land in the O C Dimick Estate near Lorenzo. The O Connell No 1 yielded 59 barrels in seven hours with no water. Chambers No 3 produced 59 barrels with 49 percent water. W A Bill Lyons of Alliance has purchased the Buick agency in Sidney to be housed in the former International Harvester building at 10th and Newton. Remodeling is underway for a grand opening in late April. Lyons, a 21 year Buick veteran, will relocate with his wife and three children after school ends. The Sidney franchise had been vacant since November 1, 1953 when Joe Hahler Jr dropped it.

Bill Lowe heart victim in Sidney death
W. G. Bill Lowe aged 48 of Sidney died of a heart attack at a local hospital in the early hours of Sunday after being admitted Friday for observation. Funeral services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church with interment in the Lowe family plot at Sidney cemetery. He is survived by his wife Frances and two brothers Robert A. of Lincoln and Jack H. of Sidney. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of the American Legion and Elks. He had worked at the Sidney post office and served as Area Rent Director for Sidney and Cheyenne County in 1952 and part of 1953. He was also a well known musician in local bands.

Lionish Snow Hits Area In Weekend Cold Wave
A near cold wave blasted the region over the weekend with temperatures plunging to 12 degrees and winds 25 to 40 mph.
