The Sidney Chamber of Commerce set the stage for the first annual Hereford cattle show and sale with a Tuesday banquet at Hazel's Cafe and a Wednesday program. Ten show lots and twenty consignors are listed with top cattle from Panhandle Hereford Association as buyers from a wide area are invited. Levy Hahn of Hay Springs will judge the show at 9 am and Charles Corkle of Norfolk will auctioneering the sale starting at 1 pm.

Farmers say last week’s heavy snow and rain will boost the 1949 wheat stand as frost leaves the ground and fields green up. Moisture soaked into Cheyenne County soil, with Sidney seeing over an inch and Dalton and Gurley near an inch and a half. Irrigated areas will benefit by preserving topsoil while awaiting warmer days for spring field work. More moisture was forecast, but farmers caution against rapid growth to avoid late freezes.

Ford Wiekhorst 78 noted county citizen died suddenly Monday at a Sidney hospital after a yearlong illness. He farmed near Potter since 1910 and helped build the Wheat belt there.
