Dean Wise of Lodgepole won the Fox Theatre Talent Quest and will represent Sidney in a Denver region contest next week. The contest ended in a close finish with Betty Hernbloom of Lodgepole as a rival. the initial applause meter tied them. Wise is an electric guitarist while Hernbloom is a vocalist. A capacity crowd attended the finals.

Telephone Company Expansion Brings Sidney Building Upgrade
The Northwestern Bell Telephone Company adds a new L shaped 66 by 63.9 foot addition to its Sidney headquarters, increasing space for toll and local operations. The two story extension will house 12 switchboard positions, a lounge and kitchen, plus ample storage on the first floor. The public entrance remains on Jackson Street with a lobby and two telephone booths to serve customers before closing time.

Thomas J. Hubbell, an inmate at Gering jail, is wanted in Sidney on a no account check charge. Cheyenne County Sheriff W. W. Schulz says Hubbell may have issued about 200 dollars in bad checks in Sidney and nearby. He is expected to be brought to Sidney for arraignment after release from Gering.

Banner Area Soil District Referendum Planned in Banner County
Unanimous approval for a county referendum on establishing a soil conservation district was voiced by 135 landowners at a Harrisburg hearing. If 75 percent vote yes on April 22, the district will be formed. only county landowners may vote. A steering group of one representative from each precinct was named, led by Robert E. Car Heavily Damaged In Accident Sunday
A 1937 Plymouth driven by Dean Ottens of the SOD was heavily damaged when it overturned in a ditch along the highway just across the Colorado line Sunday night. Sheriff W. W. Schulz reported Ottens, returning from Fort Morgan to the SOD, struck a rough spot in the road and swerved, suffering minor injuries.

Bond Issue Proposed to Expand Sidney Northside School
The Sidney board of education has hired Kirkpatrick and Pettis of Omaha to arrange a $33 000 bond issue for a three room addition to the Northside schoolhouse. An election is expected in about six weeks. Plans by Eugene Groves call for a simple, timely expansion to relieve severe overcrowding as the term 1949 50 nears. The district, serving grades one through four north of the UP tracks, needs space due to Sioux Villa development adding about 175 families.

Power and Phone Troubles Not Bad In Sidney
Thursday's storm brought little trouble for local power and telephone crews in Sidney. A wet cable knocked out about 60 telephone lines for several hours, but no widespread outages were reported. The Bell Telephone Company handled a flood of calls, reaching near 10,000 in a day, with 19 operators on duty and extra help deployed. Power lines saw minimal damage, aside from one primary line near the Methodist church affecting 40 to 50 customers, plus two other lines weighed down by snow.

Weed Control Rates Set by County Noxious Weed District
County officials set weed spraying rates for the season. Noxious weeds cost 4.50 per acre, annual weeds 7.00 per acre, with taxes offsetting noxious spraying. Earl Lobb Dies Former Sidney Resident in Florida
Earl M. Lobb a former Sidney resident died in Florida last Friday and was buried at Lincoln Wednesday. Born May 9, 1891 in Waverly Illinois he moved with his parents to Clay Center Nebraska then Sidney where he finished high school. He later lived in University Place Kearney Hastings and Arnold before moving to Florida 16 years ago. Surviving are his wife four daughters and several brothers and sisters including J O Lobb of Sidney.
