Oberfelder seeks writ to force full value assessments

Oberfelder and Company petition the district court to compel seventeen precinct assessors to assess real and personal property at full value rather than one third. Judge Grimes scheduled a hearing for April 7. The suit seeks payment on 159 county service claims totaling about 4500 dollars from 1894 to 1896, blocked by no funds or levies.

Lands Transfer Near Redington and Local Directives

C D Essig sold a quarter section near Redington to W G Pickerell for 600 dollars. The report covers local trades, visits, shipments, a new stationery and cigar store opening, farming prospects, a large horse sale at Union Pacific yards, and public reading room board actions with Union Pacific talks and local officers.

First National Bank Announces Capital Paid and Lease

The board of directors paid in the necessary capital stock and ordered bonds deposited with the U S treasurer. A five year lease was made for the lower west half of the Callahan block. Fixtures from A H Andrews Co Chicago were ordered. A fire proof vault will be built from the ground up. The bank aims to open between May first and fifteenth.

Sidney Separator Station sale eyed to open steam laundry

A Creamery Package Manufacturing Co. representative in Sidney met local stockholders to discuss disposing of the idle separator station built by Omaha firm. Stockholders owe 1,200 of 2,000 dollars for the building. insufficient milk production led to closure. If sold to open a steam laundry, proceeds would repay paying stockholders and the Package Co.

Severe Windstorm Disrupts Telegraph Lines Across Region

A mid night Tuesday storm struck with snow and sleet, toppling fences and crippling telegraph poles along Union Pacific and Burlington lines. About twenty poles fell between Sidney and Bronson, cutting telegraphic service from 2 AM to 8 AM. Repairs linked Sidney to Omaha and North Platte by 8 AM, but west wires remained unusable until late afternoon. Train service was delayed Wednesday due to the storm's brief but fallout heavy impact.

Hornaday and Fletcher Wed at Potter Home

Mr Chas Hornaday and Miss Mabel Fletcher were married at the groom's parents home in Potter Wednesday evening. Rev W H D Hornaday of Cambridge Neb officiated. The couple, both well regarded in Potter, received congratulations and a wedding supper followed.

Sheep Herder Injured by Train Near Angora Station

Leo Kapka, a sheep herder, was struck by a Burlington passenger train south of Angora station on Friday night. He was taken to Sidney for medical care, regaining consciousness after arrival. Dr. J P Dullard treated him, with the doctor favoring trampling over engine impact due to lack of broken bones. Kapka improves with rest.

Government land probe targets dubious Dalton filings

Special agent W. R. Lesser examined eleven homestead filings at Dalton made by African American men accused of fictitious entries and prepayment schemes. Witnesses testified as the investigation expands to Alliance with forty five similar cases. Prosecutions may follow for defrauding the government.
