Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee addressed a Sidney luncheon, urging a strong Korea policy and warning against a war of attrition while advocating an international peace frame with force as needed. He also called for ending machine politics and restoring government morality.
Senator Kefauver urged registration of all five percenters in Washington and full disclosure of income and work. He proposed a national crime commission with subpoena power and warned against defeatism and frustration. He noted Captain Kerr’s unsure stance in the Nebraska primary and claimed Kerr aims to head him off.
A 11:55 p m March 18 crash at Potter near a service station involved Don Tisdale driving a 195? Chevrolet colliding with a parked 1948 Diamond T truck driven by Charles R. Jones of Cheyenne. No injuries. the truck incurred damage while Jones faces arraignment on charges of parking too far out on the highway.
A man rushed to catch a bus to Denver after misplacing his car. He reported it stolen when unable to locate it near the old Telegraph building. Police later found the vehicle parked by The Kokjer Garage, exactly where he intended to park it.
An exhaust explosion at the Sidney Power Plant late Sunday afternoon caused excitement but little damage. The blast occurred during switching from Diesel to natural gas, likely igniting accumulated gas in the exhaust stack. City Manager Virgil Knowles cited emergency openings as mitigating damage and noted repairs finished by Monday night.
Cheyenne County Rural Youth officials announce the weekly meeting moves to Wednesday at the Potter Youth Center. The event launches the annual membership drive and invites prospective members to attend.
Oliver A. Swain 46 dies after six years illness in local hospital. Services Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Gehrig Funeral Home with Rev. Henry Monnich. Greenwood Cemetery burial. Pallbearers named August Jurgens, Joe Frerichs, William Dethlefson, Frank Alster, Cory Hagwood, Clay DeLashmutt. Survivors include widow Mayta, four children, two brothers, two sisters, and eight grandchildren.
The hog quiz show, delayed by last weekend’s snow, will be held this Saturday March 29 at the high school auditorium. Sponsored by the Sidney chapter of Future Farmers of America and the Cheyenne County Farmers Non-Stock, it caps a hog feeding contest at the Non-Stock feed store. Mike the winner will be butchered and prizes awarded for best checkerboard aprons and best hog callers during Saturday night’s program. The event is open to students and adults and starts at 8 p m.
Sidney Postmaster John W Martinosky says the Post Office Department, following Defense Dept guidance, caps overseas airmail for armed forces and civilian government personnel served via military post offices and naval vessels. Effective March 15, the limit is 30 inches combined length and girth and two pounds. Surface parcel post limits remain unchanged.
Cheyenne Morrill Devel and Garden counties discuss merging into a single welfare district with commissioners from each county at a Sidney meeting. Myer Avedovich, Nebraska welfare official, will speak as the special guest. Similar statewide plans follow a Welfare Department suggestion. If approved, the state would form districts of one large or four smaller western counties.
A spring blizzard struck the Nebraska Panhandle last Friday and Saturday, crippling transportation and halting weekend business but causing minimal damage otherwise. The storm skirted the southern Panhandle and moved into Nebraska from the Rockies toward Denver and Kansas, with the heaviest effects east of the region. Roads were hazardous with icy patches and drifting snow, though main highways were passable with caution. Sidney cleared downtown streets by noon Saturday, while the worst routes remained closed or restricted including Highway 29 near Harrisburg and Gering, and Highway 19 between Gurley and Dalton. Snow totals varied, with Sidney at four inches and Scottsbluff and nearby towns reporting only traces before a warm sun melted much of it Sunday.
Oil news notes a potential new discovery area in Kimball County by Vaughey and Vaughey at Goodwin No 1 south of Dix. Drill stem tests yielded 537 feet of oil among 6,046 to 6,092 feet and two sand sections at 8 and 2 feet. Progress hindered by bad roads, cold weather, and general exploration delays across Cheyenne, Kimball, and Logan counties with multiple wells and fields updated.
The first regular meeting of Cheyenne County extension sponsoring board will be held next Saturday morning at 10 o'clock in the county extension office. Verlin Livingston, president, will preside. Cheyenne County Farm Bureau members will meet with the board to complete the transfer of all business concerning extension.
Nebraska voters face a possible large write-in vote next Tuesday led by Rep. Howard Buffett backing Taft. Eisenhower enthusiasts spread from Alliance to Scottsbluff with an I Like Ike push. Voters are advised to spell names correctly, mark the box, and use write-ins if not voting for certified candidates.
Sidney high school musicians stage pre contest performances next Sunday afternoon and Tuesday night with the public invited. Vocal contests Sunday include soloists mixed chorus and glee clubs at three o clock. Tuesday features instrumentalists with small groups. District contest reps to be chosen in Scottsbluff on April 17 and 18. Admission fifty cents for adults.
Sidney Parent Teachers Association will elect new officers at the regular meeting Wednesday night at 8 in the Junior High School building. Speaker Jack Knicely will discuss "This Is Our Problem" focusing on Americanism. School music department will present musical numbers.
Beginning March 22 the extra ten percent charge on postcard purchases of 50 or more was discontinued. Postmaster John W. Martinosky announced Congress repealed the fee effective that date.
Fred Siedow, retired Union Pacific worker and Sidney pioneer, died Sunday afternoon at his home. He would have turned 90 next July 30, his wife having died March 10 thirteen days earlier. Survived by children Carl Mueller, Karl Siedow, Herman Siedow, Fred Siedow Jr, Mrs Louis M Worthington, Mrs Bert Steele, and Henri A Siedow. ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral Wednesday at 2 pm at The Craig Mortuary with Rev. Henry Monnich officiating. Burial in Sidney Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers: B. O. Tracy, Maris Christensen, J L Pindell, Leon Fine, N. E. Witters, Osborn.
Carl Christ Sr., Sidney contractor, was elected president of the Sidney Rotary Club for the coming year. Other officers include Rae L. Jones as vice president Marius Christensen as treasurer J K Mahr as secretary Jack Knicely sergeant at arms George Barlow and Warren Cunningham as directors. Warren Stewart led a program featuring four five minute talks on civic issues including a city manager update on grade separations progress and a push for a community hospital. Christ Sr. reported progress on a Sidney community hotel Knicely outlined Fort Sidney Days set for June 20 and February club attendance averaged 93.29 percent, best in the district.
Lodgepole Heating Company opened over the weekend with strong turnout and appreciation from owners for the fine sponsorship. Six door prizes were awarded with winners including Mrs. E. J. Myles of Chappell, Mrs. Hubert Bondegard of Lodgepole, Mrs. R. N. Huff of Lodgepole, Mrs. A. C. Bale of Lodgepole, H. A. Lindley of Lodgepole, and Mrs. Paul Huff of Lodgepole.
Sidney Community hotel board heard final sketches for a four story hotel at 9th and Jackson with 51 rooms and potential for two extra floors. Design Inc of St Louis predicts completion in 2–3 weeks with possible additional funding to add 17 rooms, construction may start by mid fall and site cleared after May 1.
A public workshop on making metal trays will be held all day Thursday, April 24 in the basement of the Sidney City Auditorium. Miss Violet Shepherd, Cheyenne County home extension agent, invites participation and asks attendees to contact the extension office to order materials.
A Social Security representative from the district office at Scotts Bluff will be in Sidney Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to noon to answer inquiries about the Social Security program. He will be at the NSES office, 842 11th Avenue, in the Telegraph building.
