Five funeral services were held this week for victims of a highway crash near Sidney Nebraska. Norman W Pace 23 driver of the death car and two Juraneks were among those honored in Lodgepole and Wallace area churches with burial in Wallace Nebraska.

Wreck survivor near discharge as funeral rites held
A wreck that claimed five workers left the scaly survivor Mrs Bertha McKellips near discharge this weekend. Funeral services for Juranek and Miss Juranek were held in Julesburg Catholic Church. Joe McCormack's remains were sent to Mulberry Kansas for funeral Thursday. John Robert Rowe, 27, to be buried at Bayard Cemetery after rites at Gehrig Funeral Home Sidney. County Attorney Jack Knicely said no disquest would be necessary. Police noted the 1948 model auto involved in the wreck.

The Telegraph published a fast breaking car wreck feature using Ralph Thompson’s photos shot and developed quickly. Plates were prepared with Sterling Advocate, while LaVern Anthony rushed images to the printer despite a ground blizzard. Patrolman Mel Busekist contributed four scene pictures, four already used, to illustrate the deadly highway peril. Mrs Keenan Services Held at Bridgeport Church
Mrs Keenan aged 84 longtime Greenwood Ranch resident died Tuesday at Pioneer Memorial Hospital Dalton after a month’s illness. Funeral services were Thursday afternoon at Bridgeport Presbyterian Church with Rev W E Ulrich. Burial beside her husband in Madison Wis. Born July 31 1887 at Wausau she graduated Downer College and married Dr George Keenan in Freeport in 1893. The couple lived four years in Bremen Germany and he later practiced in Madison until his 1915 death. She came to Greenwood Ranch in 1924 with her family and amassed art objects from abroad. She once traveled to London for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Survivors: three daughters Mrs Edward Lunn of Washington DC Mrs Carl Icks of Green Bay Wis Mrs Frances Wehrman of Nelson Neb and sons Sidney and George who operate Greenwood Ranch. Also five grandchildren.

Ernest Jaeckel to retire from Union Pacific
Ernest F Jaeckel of 515 Illinois Street, a 30 year Union Pacific Railroad employee, will retire effective March 27. He and his wife plan a public auction of furnishings on March 28 at 1 p.m. before visiting relatives in Iowa and then the South. They came to Sidney in 1917 and sold their home to John Underdown.

A Telegraph survey across Cheyenne Kimball and Morrill counties shows Taft favored by about sixty percent of Republicans with Eisenhower around twenty five and MacArthur fifteen. Hog Quiz Show Saturday Night at Sidney High
The Sidney High School FFA sponsors a hog quiz show at 8 pm in the high school auditorium. A big winner will be butchered and proceeds fund livestock projects for Vo-Ag students. Other events include a dog calling contest for boys and a checkerboard apron contest for girls with movies and local entertainment. Admission is fifty cents.

Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Ernest 95 will be held Monday at 9 30 a m in Dalton Catholic Church. The Gehrig Funeral Home is in charge. Five Die In Wreck Linked To Broken Highway Pavement
State patrol testimony and the truck driver’s statements describe a fatal collision caused when a car carrying five rolled out of control after striking a large section of broken paving. The driver testified the car swerved left then momentarily regained control before veering into the oncoming truck. It remains speculation whether the car’s steering or other mechanism failed when hitting the rough road, but the result is five lives lost due to the highway condition.
